Coronavirus disrupts the heart of electronics manufacturing

Factories in China, the center of the electronics industry’s supply chain, have been closed for an extended Lunar New Year holiday and the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus. Most are expected to reopen on Monday, a week later than scheduled.

But quarantines and other measures put in place to stop the spread of the disease in China could continue to disrupt electronics manufacturing well into the 2020 holiday season, even if factories quickly return to full production, manufacturing experts said.

    Because we can't get young people to live in a company dorm & work 10 hours a day for $10.  We spoiled our kids.

      More like we don't have The A.I. robots built yet. Most new factory jobs in/on a product line will not have humans making any products, only maintenance personnel with a few shipping people along with raw materials coming in.  The blue collar worker
     in this sector is gone/abolished forever because of profit margins in super-rich pockets.
       No one talks about it because The government knows is going to be chaos in unemployment ranks and are preparing for it.

     Sure you can work construction jobs and other hard back breaking work that can't be formalized yet but the days of cush factory job is over.

    I hear ya Serf. But, for most of the modern electronic components which China is known for making, requires too precise application for humans anyway. Even the PCB's are too precise and are also multi-layered so would be extremely tough for a human to soldier them.
    I've said this a lot since the 90's:
    America is turning into a country of middle management. There are a few low end jobs such as janitorial and fast food restaurants. Some middle labor jobs like you described, craftsmen, tradesmen, etc. Along with some very tough higher labor jobs like oil rigs Then, there is what every kid growing up was told, and clear through college. Get out and become a manager.

    One interesting side note, at least here in Oklahoma, there has been a renewed push at the high school level towards the trades. Specifically heat/air, welding, electrical, plumbing, construction, engine and body repair, etc. I believed what I was told when I was a kid about anyone can be anything. It has some truth to it, but I don't think everyone really is cut out for certain things. I really believe a lot of kids go to college not because they want to necessarily want to, but because that's what has been pushed on them. I got started into I.T. after my 3rd major back issue. I had realized by then I would have to use my brain going forward. So, I thought what do I enjoy doing? Well, apparently there wasn't a big demand for me in p0rn, so I looked at other options. Though I had gotten out of it by that point, I always liked computers as a kid so that was where I headed.
