My pain (intractable persistent degenerative neuropathy) level runs in cycles - I have periods that are not that bad were I can cope and function and perform some home tasks and chores...
There are periods were it's debilitating and I am left non functional.
About a week ago it flared up badly and I blacked out going down a staircase and dinged myself pretty hard - and the pain has continued to increase and had a bad impact (and I won't let them increase the period or frequency or power of the pain meds)
Being stupid and stubborn I simply try to ride out these storms at home as I dislike hospital stays - but after 3-4 days of not being able to eat or keep meds down things got worse and was in rough shape.
I called Into my primary care docs office to make an appointment to try and resolve some of these issues and complications (platinum toxicity) and they insisted i go to the hospital - they called for an ambulance with me on the line.
Turns out I have 7 rib fractures (back left quadrant) and was badly anemic - and had lost about 26 pounds over the course of 5 weeks - blood pressure was dangerously high and I was dehydrated...
Immune system comprised and kidney function suffering.
And when they drew blood and tested it they discovered I had been cutting back on my pain meds - and they get pretty angry with me when I don't maintain the pain med schedule...
They now have moved me to a rehabilitation facility (inpatient) and tell me they want me to stay for 2-3 weeks while they try to fix me up.
I understand what they want to do - and it's for my benefit but I don't want to be here now let alone stay here for weeks.
I will admit to being in rough shape right now but I would rather recover at home.

Damn Mike, sorry to hear all that.
Good thoughts and Prayers go out to you.

Damit Mike, doing it your way is what got you there. Take it easy, let them get you fixed up better before go heading back home. 0 -
That's a big part of the issue...
They can spruce me up or polish me till I shine temporarily - but they cannot fix me.
Apparently platinum is like lead or mercury poisoning - once it's in your system there is no way to remove it...
I knew I was in rough shape - but I really did not think that any of the ribs were broken / I figured bruised and I had not recognized how much weight I had lost.
I have never been in an inpatient admit rehab facility - it's right across the street from the hospital and some of the same nurses and staff migrate back and forth...
I know it's for my benefit but I don't want to be here.

Mike do you ever get a warning when you're going to black out? Like maybe a little dizzy spell before it happens...anything? If there's anyway possible when you think something is not just right could you get down on the floor or ground as fast as possible by going to your knees or sitting very quickly before you black out? Maybe if you could learn the warning signs you might save yourself a fall. You can't keep falling like this or eventually you're going to fall on something that will impale you. I continue to hate to hear about your suffering and wish there was something I could do for you. Try to hang in there. I know you're no quitter. Lesser men would have given up long ago. 0 -
Sometimes I can tell a blackout or room spinning vertigo induced fall is going to occur - and I can grab hold of something or sit down...
Sometimes it's a complete surprise.
Like the body trips a breaker and things just shut down.
It's actually a pretty frightening experience.
I certain that if I pushed things less or played it safe more I could avoid some of the problems - but changing my behavior would also invite new issues.
I do not have the answers on this one - still trying to work it out.

Mike, I am sorry that you seem to be between a rock and a hard place right now. Fight on and I hope to see you feel better. Will pray for you today.---------------Ray 0 -
You have a lot of people pulling for you Mike. I do not post to quite a few of your threads, because I am at a loss for words. That (however) does not mean that I am not thinking about you, or wishing you the best.
I have experienced the drop like a rock scenario over the years, with my A-Fib problem. Too many stories to relate here. Sometimes I get a little bit of fair warning, some times, I drop like a rock - and have hurt myself. I hope/wish you the best Mike.
Best Wishes and Prayers going out to you Mike.

I applaud your determination and perseverance Mike. I have had a few health problems but they pale in comparison to your ongoing situation. A wise person told me "Do what the dang doctor tells you. He can make a better guess about your meds than you can." So kick back, heal up, and keep checking in to let us know your progress. Bob 0
