Bought a gun from the auction side.
Did my yearly purchase on Gunbroker. Figured I need a good 308 bolt action and it seems Ruger is the last company that makes a left hand bolt action that still has iron sights.
Need a decent scope for it (200yds or less - not too powerful) and need to re-research scout scopes vs. conventional scopes. Last I read on Scout Scopes is they were piss poor for light gathering in early morning and sun down situations. I had 5 deer walk down my road last night, right around dusk. My method of hunting deer is to go out in the morning till around 9am. Call it quits then go out again about 330/4pm. I see more deer moving in that late afternoon time frame.

Good set up for a lot of things. I'd probably get a smaller magazine if I was hunting with it. I'd also line up the iron sights before remounting the scope. That way if I needed to pull the scope in the field I could keep on hunting. 0 -

You read my mind. I plan to get a 5rd or 3rd mag for it. Want to lessen the weight if possible. Would love to put a lightweight poly stock on it but it seems Ruger doesn't sell one for the left hand Scout rifle.0 -

IIRC, the main difference is the scout scopes have longer eye relief than traditional rifle scopes, but shorter than handgun scopes. Nice looking shootin' iron too.. 6 -
If you're only going out to 200 yards I wouldn't bother with a BDC. Sight it in at 200 and you'll do just fine.drobs said:

Nice grab , drobs. I have one and it is all of a gun a person would ever need. I use mine for my go to hog gun . very accurate. it took me a lil bit to get used to the scope being out there tho. like was said above sight it in at 150/200 yds and you will be good to go for what comes by. 3 -
Been looking at some 1-4x, 1-6x, 1-8x scopes. Seems these are the hot item for 3 gun shooters. Red Dot / Scope all in one combo.

Picked up that scope. Got it for a little less from:
Waiting on a set of Warne quick detach low mount rings.
Need to figure out a way to bore-sight the scope on my own.
Plan to sight in the irons in the next couple of days.
Slight complaint on the rifle - the bolt has a lot of side to side slop on it with the action fully open.
Seems difficult to work the bolt fast. Maybe I just need practice with LH bolt guns. I usually shoot RH bolt actions with my left hand, working the bolt with my right hand.

The Cooper / Styer scout carbine with forward mount long eye relief quality steel tube low power scope offered in niche chamberings like .376 dryer (for govt compliance) we're / are very nice guns....
Rugers take on the concept is well executed and we'll received.

That is a nice pack rifle. My friend Robby in Colorado really likes the Ruger scout for long hikes elk hunting. He gets his elk every year.

Another consideration for carbines and scout rifles are muzzleloader and shotgun scopes. I have a Leupold VX-2 (I think) 2x7x32 on my Benelli SBE slug barrel, one on a Ruger .44 mag carbine, and another on Leupold QD quick release scope mounts. They made/make a 3x9x40 of the same if bigger objective is the objective. LOL 3 -

I had three Nikon BDC scopes fail. Nikon IS out of the scope business avoid them like the plague. Vortex has proven to be awesome with the 2X7 and 3X9 being very satisfactory for me. I now own seven of them.0 -

Unfortunately this is Ruger's cheap variation to the anti-bind solutions. This is a limit placed by the manufacturing since the receiver is cast which foregoes other better solutions available through the machining processes.
I've known other left hand folks who fought the same battle when they were used to using right hand bolts with the overhand method. Practice is the only solution until you're able to retrain your hands and arm to accommodate the new left hand bolt. Remember, 'slow is smooth and smooth is fast'.
