dumb new questions about flu........

   started my physical therapy yesterday, only week from surgery, and only home 4 days from hospital.  first thing the little gal at the counter ask me was have you been around anyone with the flu??   I said yeah probubly lots of
 em, just got out of hospital, she just looks at me, I said I'm sure there were a lot there with the flu or flu syptoms.
  next question have you been out of country, mainly china recently????  well no, just said I just got out of hospital few days ago,  then ask her what would you do If I said yes???    she said I don't know, no one has has said that yet........  got me wondering what if someone did say yes. would they tell them to leave???????

    Before boarding as cruise ship you are given a questioner asking how you are feeling. Do you have flu-like symptoms? intestinal "issues"? do you have, or have you been exposed to anyone with hepatitis? ect. If you answer in the affirmative, you get to spend your first two or three nights aboard ship quarantined in your cabin. While everyone else is at the bar pounding down drinks and then gorging at the buffet, you are stuck inside. Hopefully you have a cabin with a view because you aren't getting outside and mixing with the other guests until the ship's doctor gives the okay. 

    There is little incentive to tell the truth. The "honor system" doesn't work. That's why we have an auto censor in this forum.

    Mark not sure which cruise line you use, but I have been on two of canivals, neither time was I asked that prior to boarding or debarking.  I was just curious you are at a DRs office for treatment, are they going to ask you to leave because you may be sick????  kinda ironic

     though do agree with the "honor system" statement.....

    For good or bad part of the training mantra - procedural safety doctrine the nurses and techs and staff are taught to ask certain questions...

    Often with no understanding or foundation indicating the why behind the questions...

    The out of the country question is mostly about parasites and tropical diseases or tainted blood transfusions...

    Certain positive answers are supposed to trigger a cdc / who / usamrid response tree to triage and contain problems or lessen the impact or limit the zone of affected ness...

    I tried to explain to a nurse today that scopalamene is a truth serum developed by the communist block and adopted / refined by the CIA - nobody believed me until they googled it...

    I work in a medical office facility and they have a stand out in the lobby I think the expectation is if someone is sick they use masks. Of course they have enough hand sanitizer around you could douse your hands about every ten feet or so!
    I have seen signs on some office doors advising that if someone is sick to don a mask and tell the front desk. Not sure what they would do since they are the primary care provider and would still treat the initial call.

    The questions aren't new.   We ask questions like that to get information that could be relevant if you had an issue.  The specific mention of China in the question is different but that may have just been her or the clinic may have added it.   Since this clinic is a rehab you generally aren't presenting with an acute illness so the questions aren't aren't really needed but guidelines and protocols are cookie cutter and don't always fit the situation.

    No, they would not have asked you to leave if you answered yes.   They may have asked you to leave if you were symptomatic (fever, cough, etc.) to reduce risk to them and other patients.  They would have asked you to leave and visit a medical clinic that could evaluate and, if needed,  treat your acute illness and told you to return when cleared.

    Asking someone if they have been out of the country recently (usually The past 3 months) helps as some pathogens may exist, or be more common there (where ever they have been) and may not exist or be common here.  It's a lot easier and faster to find something if you know you need to look for it.   Again that information is relative if you are ill.   It could be relative if a pandemic existed and the decision had been made to quarantine people visiting that area until the incubation period was over, but that is rare

    I've read the hand sanitizer found in many places is a very poor subsitute for washing in hot water and soap....mostly just a 'feel good' thing like restrictive gun laws.
    That's not an accurate description.  Hand sanitizers are very effective in what they do.   They are a different tool than hand washing, neither replaces the other.   One washes off pathogens the other kills them.   However there are pathogens hand sanitizers do not kill and are better controlled by washing (not that common) and there are pathogens that are hard to completely wash off but easily killed by sanitizers.   There is a reason your surgeon does a 3-5 minute hand scrub washing their hands and wrist with sanitizing soaps, it covers both.

    Hand sanitizers are a very useful tool in combating the spread of most of our common pathogens.

    We see almost all Chinese wearing masks to protect themselves from the virus.  What do they do with the mask when they get home?  It may have the virus on it that will zap them later.  Burn the mask?  Soak it in alcohol?

    Start with good nutrition.  Add some supplements.  Eat garlic and cayenne every day.  Wash your hands often.  Try not to touch your face or rub your eyes without cleaning your hands first.  A mask without eye protection isn't very effective.

    Oh BTW, from one of the articles you posted: "Repeated studies have shown that ethanol-based hand sanitizers are effective at killing viruses,"   Just saying

    Yes, you should wash your hands when you can.   But don't discount the benefits of the sanitizers.  Like I posted before, one don't replace the other, but both have their place.   I am not telling you to not wash your hands.   In the hospital we use sanitizers, but we still wash our hands just like before.
