    I've dealt with 3-4 insurance claims for guns after fires.

    I will say...whatever bullcrap fire rating your safe has it doesn't matter. If your house burns down your guns in the safe are unusable and you need to push your insurance to pay for replacement value, it is capped on most policies at like $5000 so if you are like most gun enthusiasts you will need a separate/additional coverage

    The finish on your wood guns will be wrecked. The bluing will be gone and probably will have surface rust by the time you get into it. The springs in your guns and magazines will be weakened and may or may not work.


    When I sold safes branded Winchester they were rated 1450 degrees for 90 minutes, but they also said if you had paper products in them you had to house them in a special document holder...what does that tell you?

    ...and don't get me started on their capacity ratings.


    Yes, everyone should have gun safes, I have a couple 60 gun safes myself but I realize their fire protection is not going to protect my guns in a total house burn down.

    I have always said that "fireproof" gun safes are a waste of money. A safe is to deter theft. That's all.

    I have a friend who is a fire fighter.  He said no safe will protect your guns in a house fire.

    I don't have speakers hooked up. Don't need them here, video  worth a thousand words. Don't get me started on capacity either. It's all BS. Lock went on my Winchester safe and my extra checks, some silver, and at least 20 firearms held ransom by this safe for over six weeks. Don't expect any help from Winchester on lock issues because you won't get it! I resisted all temptations to call locksmith or open safe myself. Finally a nice man on the internet told me how to fix my problem and sold me a new lock. Be very careful about buying keypad/lock on flea bay as you may just be buying more of the same.

    Been a fireman for 37 years. Most safes do about what this one did . Most of the guns will be salvageable if cleaned quickly enough

    A friends place burned. His safe dropped through the floor into the basement which filled with water from the firehoses.
    The guns not only burned they all rusted severely.

    I ignore the fire rating on gun safes is it silly. Gun safes are for theft protection not fire.

    That's why my safes have dial combinations. 20+ years old and never a problem. As for fire protection I told all my customers that it wasn't a sure thing and as referenced above the safe will end up in the basement full of water anyway. A locksmith told me that opening a dial safe after a fire was quicker than a digital one. Usually the mechanism would still work so cutting up the safe might not be necessary for access. Bob

    Couple things I learned the hard way. Got a good deal from Tractor Supply but the safe business is highly competitive and some will put a cheap keypad/lock on to drive the price down below the competition. If you insist on digital lock instead of manual try not to use a code that has a repetitive number in it. If I ever buy another it probably won't be digital. Many mfgs.  have a back door key but not mine. If your lock/keypad won't work don't panic yet, your code is stored inside the safe. A lot of those keypads were junk and revision numbers very important. There are good and bad locksmiths. Either way you are probably going to end up with a $500-$600 boat anchor if drilled or broken into unless he is a real pro. Bottom line, be patient and don't panic if you can't get in that darn safe. Fireproof, forget it. Safes will slow a thief down but not foolproof. I have a Army buddy in SC whose neighbor installed safe on outside wall. Thieves knocked holes in wall, wrapped heavy chain around safe and pulled thru wall and loaded in truck, probably less than ten minutes. Don't skip bolting them down(might help) and stay away from outside walls.

    My sisters house burned down Jan 2 this year. What the heat did not get the smoke did...
    The safe was toast.

    If you haven't already, check out the 'lock-picking lawyer' on youtube. He is a gun guy, too. NO lock or safe is secure if he's around. "Bosnian Bill' is another who has destroyed all my faith in locks. He, too, is a firearms aficionado.
