If there is a "K" prefix before the serial number? It would date to 1948. The front sights are almost always different, on the target Masterpiece, and Combat Masterpiece revolvers. Likely yours will have a tapered ramp front sight. Which Smith called the "Baughman Quick Draw". The Target revolvers, had .had a squared off "Patridge" front sight.

this one does not have the Baughman sight. this sight is rounded in front then squares off, then angles back. what would that make it?

Sounds like a Baughman to me. The back of the sight, tapers down to barrel. GOOGLE both sights, to see which one you have.

it does after it squares off straight down about 5/16 of an inch.  in other words, not a continuous taper.
