Mobil 1 Synthetic oil Test
Just got thru changing oil ... It was still slick.. only a little color change after 7500 mile. That test is as good as some You Tube Videos

So, the concrete blocks did not collapse due to being innapropriately positioned?

Mobil. Although when in your crankcase while driving you are correct that it is mobile.

I bought a GM crate engine and at 30000 miles oil change I cut the filter and found the cam was going bad 0 -

I just never knew there was a cam in an oil filter. They never taught that in mechanics school.

The filter cam is located just under the canuter valve. Careful, it is spring loaded!! 3 -
You should always replace the filter when you change the oil. Most likely the oil filter camshaft will not last until the next oil change. Oil filters sold at the better quality parts stores have the new oil filter camshaft included.

At least there were no concrete block particles in the oil drain pan. Mark me Safe from collapsing blocks. I used ramps today 0 -

Flat tappet cam+oil with no zinc=no cam lobes.Always run ZDPP oil or additive with flat tappet cam engines. 0 -
How did you know it was particles from the cam versus any other part? Not picking curious, did you do a spectrometric oil analysis?

A guy I used to work with ~30 years ago had an interesting take on (conventional) oil changes. His feeling was it was the filter getting clogged was the biggest issue. So, he'd drain his oil into a catch pan when it was warm (not hot). Then, he'd run it through some home-made gizmo that filtered it some. He then put a new filter in, and returned the oil back to the motor. He would put new fresh oil in as he thought it needed it. I have never tried his method personally on my own vehicles, but he had 2 vehicles. One was approaching 200k miles and the other one nearly at 300k. I do think they put a lot more additives and such in now than they used to at that time (1990-1995). Intriguing theory... 0 -
I'm pretty sure the old dino oils would lose their viscosity and become less slick after working 3 to 5 thousand miles of hot operation. I do know for a fact that my old oil always changed from that nice amber clear look to a murky dark black color when changing. Always gave me reason to trust the manual about intervals. 0 -
In the Navy we had a thing called a Delavel oil purifier we would spin the oil with centrifugal force to get the crap out and reuse it. Not sure if they still do that but it was good enough then 0 -

You should see the re-used oil (with only a change in filter). It would clear it up to almost new color (the 2 times I saw him do this). If times were desperate, I might consider it. But, until then, I'll protect my engine.
In my truck, I switched to synthetic when I had a job where I would put 3-6k miles on in any given week. I just didn't have time to change it every week. Anyway, right on cue, my truck started leaking some oil. I have also tried the high mileage without any change. But, at some time I'll probably just drop a crate motor into it and be done. It's over 230k now and the common parts have mostly been replaced. I like it, it's paid for and I don't want anything else so I'll stick with it. Ironically, when this truck was brand new it was EXACTLY what I wanted. However, I didn't buy it. I ended up getting it from a former employer. I worked for him for 6 years and he started falling further and further behind on my pay. One day he asked me if I was still interested in his truck. I was, we worked out a fair amount (still didn't cover all my past wages). 1998 K1500 3 door extended cab 5.7 Vortec (last year of the SBC blocks before LS). All black outside, maroon sport interior, tow package, etc. I had to eventually leave that employer. We remain friends still and I help him sometimes on Server installs (I.T.). Only thing that upset me is that he had several guns that I wanted and would have traded for the labor, or given him some even. He had a bring-back K98 Mauser and P-08 Luger both in exceptional condition. I was so hacked when he sold them to someone else while knowing I was a gun collector and he still owed me over 2 grand (I would have paid him the difference if needed, though that might have been somewhat close).0
