Mobil 1 Synthetic Motor Oil...
"In 1998, Mobil sued Castrol over the discovery that Castrol was processing conventional oil and calling it synthetic. At the time, Mobil 1 was still created using a true synthetic base stock, which is more expensive. Mobil lost the lawsuit, and, as a result, the "new" definition of 'synthetic oil' became much looser. In order to stay competitive, Mobil needed to downgrade their process to the more affordable process. The result is a hydrocracked, hydroisomerized conventional oil. Lubes N' Greases magazine has reported shortcomings in the ability to pass the tests that the original Mobil 1 formula was able to."

ive used wal mart synthetic for years in my yard and farm tractors. also use it in my vehicles. i change my oil every 7000 miles on my vehicles and use the top grade fram filters. no oil related problems what so ever. a lot of brands of oil are out there but how many of them have their own refinery. many come down the same assembly line and go into different colored containers. all oils have a spec on them and as long as they meet or exceed the manufacturer of the motor's spec they all will work well. the key is what others have said " change your oil regularly".

There's another issue with yard equipment. You don't drive very fast and some people claim you can detect a difference in smell so you're breathing the partially combusted oil and toxic ZDDP because you're not driving away from your exhaust cloud.

The big issue is that the EPA banned ZDDP (zinc phosphate) in motor oils some years back. They claimed that ZDDP tended to cause premature failure the catalytic converters. The fact that modern oils without ZDDP were inferior to older versions got hushed up at the "urging" of the big oil companies. ZDDP additives are available for addition to modern oils used in older pre-cat converter cars, and off-road vehicles, but it is illegal to add it to your modern vehicles. It works by depositing a layer on the oil lubed engine parts preventing direct metal to metal contact.

When I bought my new Nissan Frontier in 1999,I ask my brother who owns a Honda-Toyota repair shop what oil to use.His reply was -It depends on how long you want to keep it.Keeping it a couple of years, any oil will do.If you plan on keeping it a long time,Castrol Dino oil the first change to break in the engine then Mobil-1 .That was 497,000 miles ago and still running fine.

600,000 miles and still Cummins 5.9 along. I used to run Mobil Delvac 1 but for the past 300K miles it has been Rotella T-6 with a FS2500 bypass system to keep it filtered. Change it every 10-12K along with both filters. Will let you know when the motor dies. Don't hold your breath waiting. It will not be because of oil issues.

Just don't mix it with dino oil and you're good.

They still allow 800 parts per million in SN-rated oils. Excessive zddp can hurt soft metals especially in engines where the oil runs on the hot side. It can bond to aluminum so well, it pulls tiny pieces off. Excessive heat or concentration can cause this form of corrosion.

My old C4 1993 Corvette, tilt the front end, big logo there, MOBIL ONE SYNTHETIC ONLY. Course it has only 41k on it but the book calls for it specifically .

Remember “ Motor oil is motor oil.”?

" I used to run Mobil Delvac 1 but for the past 300K miles it has been Rotella T-6 "
We run 15w40 DelVac or Rotella "white jug"[don't remember if that's T4 or T-6(whichever is the non-synthetic)] in the smaller farm tractors (both dsl and gas), self-propelled sprayer, and dump truck. I will say that Rotella white jug has better "cold flowability" than DelVac so if you happen to be in a cold climate, this will increase start-up wear resistance. Blue jug Rotella 5W40 (synthetic) goes in the combine(DUETZ air cooled diesel), skidloader, and a couple of the hard use pickups--it has provided stellar performance for years in these engines which get cold started often and pulled hard when running.

I'm using supertech advanced full synthetic ($16.48 for 5 qt jug, 20,000 mile oci) and Motorcraft filters, switching from ST full synthetic. ST full synthetic been analyzed on BITOG through the years, it's hard to justify paying more for another brand.

I was reading about motor oil the other day and I didn't realize that Mobil 1 had downgraded their process of making synthetic motor oil and it was done several years ago after they lost their lawsuit against Castrol.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobil_1Most on the shelf "full synthetic" oils use dino base stocks here in the US. You would have to buy some pricey boutique brands to get true full synthetic.

I started using the store brand conventional oil from the local farm and home store because it would go sale for around $10.00 for a 5 quart jug. I changed it at 4000 miles religiously. At about 80,000 miles, after the second oil change using this oil, it started using a quart every 1,000-1,500 miles. I changed to Mobile 1 and the oil consumption stopped. I have no explanation.
