"In 1998, Mobil sued Castrol over the discovery that Castrol was processing conventional oil and calling it synthetic. At the time, Mobil 1 was still created using a true synthetic base stock, which is more expensive. Mobil lost the lawsuit, and, as a result, the "new" definition of 'synthetic oil' became much looser. In order to stay competitive, Mobil needed to downgrade their process to the more affordable process. The result is a hydrocracked, hydroisomerized conventional oil. Lubes N' Greases magazine has reported shortcomings in the ability to pass the tests that the original Mobil 1 formula was able to."

You won't have a problem with even the cheapest made oil as long as you keep it changed. But the fact remains these companies are selling "full synthetic" when it's not made with a synthetic base. Amsoil maybe one that actually sells the real thing. 0 -

Had a service manager at a Dodge dealer tell me Fram oil filters would cause my diesel problems. I contacted Fram directly and gave them his name. He no longer works for Dodge. He made a mistake and put it on the service papers when I had the air bag changed. 3 -
You'd be surprised. Ask any auto mechanic that's rebuilt engines. One of the contractors supervisors that worked for Union Boiler that was on site at Widows Creek Steam Plant back in the 90s when I was working there never changed his oil. He only added to it. Does Mobil claim their Mobil 1 product to be full synthetic? They do have a product branded full synthetic though. If you are able to track down the ingredients list for either or both, please share it.0 -

I don't have a lab or the know how to use one but I have used Mobile One Full Synthetic for years and I am very happy with it. I also use their filters and usually change at 7000 mile intervals. Most of my driving is on the highway and of at least twenty miles duration. This is really easy on a car as opposed to stop and go or short trips where the engine never get warm enough long enough to burn off any moisture inside.I turned wrenches in two dealerships for nine years and have seen cars when the oil pan drain plug was removed thick black mud like substance would slowly trickle out. I have had customers tell me they were going to trade cars every two years and weren't going to spend any money on maintaining the car. People are pretty stupid and can justify almost anything.0 -

I just must be the luckiest guy in the world. 50 years of using composted dinosaurs and never had an oil based engine problem and never blew one up. Hope saying this doesn't jinx me. Bob 6 -
Sorry boys but Mobil 1 is not full synthetic since it is not made with a synthetic base just like Castrol and many of the other ones. Read the report. They lost the court case and degraded their process to a conventional oil base so they could compete just like Castrol. Check out Amsoil and you'll see why they're charging $13.00 a quart for theirs. It's expensive to make.

Well according to M1 they are a full syn base at least in their better grades. I used amsoil back in 1983 and 1984 but got tired of trying to find the damn stuff. I will stick to M1 for now. 0 -

A LOT of people. Had a truck in my shop with no oil pressure. Guy didn't remember the last time he changed it. The "oil" was so thick it would not drain out the plug. Even with most cars having a reminder that pops up on the dash some people just ignore it.0 -
Mobil 1 is all I have ever ran in my 4 cylinder Nissan truck.Little over 480,000 miles. Zero engine problems.It may have done the same with dino oil,but I know for sure it did it with synthetic. 0 -
I'm not defending Castrol you must be reading someone else's post. I'm not a fan of either one. Castrol and Mobil 1 are basically the same. They use conventional oil as their base. My dad instilled in me the habit of changing oil in vehicles twice a year. Even if the rig wasn't driven much. He enjoyed used cars all of his life and had quite a slew of them over many years. I can't remember him ever buying anything brand new but all of the used he had were kept up very well.
I have been using Mobile One in my cars, trucks, tractors, lawn mowers, and snow blowers for the last few years and still change the oil and filters twice a year. Habits are hard to break......good & bad!0 -
LOL Oil loyalty like car brands everyone has a story. As noted much earlier simply changing the oil on a regular basis works wonders. I would imagine with hard use like heavy towing Etc. their may be some specific issues and some manufacturers seem to insist on a specific code for the oil used in specific engines (which tells me rather than engineer a better product they rely on denying warranty based on claims of improper care?) My Chevy truck has 300K with no engine noise, no oil burn no smoke, my Kia is pushing 200K with no engine noise, no oil burn no smoke, I would hope any other vehicle I own would do the same. I change at 3K religiously and don't buy any fancy oil either. Air filter, good gas, change oil like a clock. My 2 cents 3 -

If you will read the back of any oil container it has the specs. Mobil 1,, Chosen by over Half the NASCAR Teams. The official motor oil of NASCAR.. that should say a lot..they beat the daylights out of engines. Chosen for factory fill by many of the worlds largest auto manufacturers. Seems to be the way this forum has gotten over the years. That, and disagreements have gotten more combative/rude over the years. I just switched from Mobil1 to Motorcraft synthetic blend. It sure quieted the car down.
Synthetic has 4X the film strength of conventional, so is harder to wipe away.
The oil film remaining on the cylinder walls and the intake valve stem might have been causing pre-ignition.
The tension of the piston rings and valve stem seals has to be correct for your oil. The best plan is probably to use what the manufacturer intended or to make small incremental changes upward like switching from conventional to synthetic blend rather than full-on Amsoil, and then to carefully check for knock with a nearly empty tank of gas that can be topped off with premium.
Cars with a throttle probably show this condition a lot less than cars with GDI because cars with GDI run with a full cylinder of air at all times, so the pressure and the likelihood of pre-ignition are always there. With a conventional throttled engine, you may not notice the knock until you run the engine at full power when it can cause damage.

Timely topic. I have been using Mobile 1 in my car and doing oil changes every 7K. The car is set by manufacturer for 5K oil changes with a reminder on the screen after 5K. I just told my wife I am really getting tired of getting of warning language every time I start the car between 5K and 7K.

ive used wal mart synthetic for years in my yard and farm tractors. also use it in my vehicles. i change my oil every 7000 miles on my vehicles and use the top grade fram filters. no oil related problems what so ever. a lot of brands of oil are out there but how many of them have their own refinery. many come down the same assembly line and go into different colored containers. all oils have a spec on them and as long as they meet or exceed the manufacturer of the motor's spec they all will work well. the key is what others have said " change your oil regularly".

Currently, FRAM is rated at the low end of the filter quality and filtration capability scale. I don't think that "Service Manager" was wrong at all.
Re: Mobil One synthetic.
The only engines we use that in is the Polaris Rangers. 0w40 does all that it's expected to do w/o fail in 10-12 ATV/UTV over the past 20 years.

Had a guy bring in a Yamaha 600 Radian, 4 cylinder air cooled four stroke. The bike had a bit over 80k miles on it. He told me the oil had at least 20k on it, probably closer to 30k. Mobil 1. With the motor still warm, I pulled the drain plug. Nothing. Then I could see a glob of black goo starting to come out.
Reinstalled the drain plug. After confirming that there was oil in the motor with a long wire tie(the sight glass was solid black) down the filler hole I took it outside and let it idle for 20-30 minutes, long enough to get really hot. Pulled the drain plug and what came out was somewhat liquid.
Let it drain for the rest of the day. When I pulled the oil filter(internal cartridge type) it was completely collapsed and had been bypassing for a long time. When I checked the valve clearance I measured the cam lobes. They were perfect.
He wanted Mobil 1 put in it with a new filter, along with a few other maintenance items. He moved soon after so I don't know how long the motor ultimately lasted. Mobil 1 is amazing stuff.

fram like many, many other companies have different "levels" of their product. the tests i have personally seen use frams lowest grade of filter. this is not the filter i use. fram is the big dog in the yard for sales and everybody else is grabbing for a piece of the pie. not saying they are the best but their better grade of filters are good filters.

I like to watch 'Project Farm'. He has done several oil comparison tests. And oil changes where he has used 5 quarts of different brands and weights of oil. Mixed regular and synthetic. All the things which you think would trash a motor in 100 miles. Ha!
