new gun....did I do okay???
A buddy showed up last night and we had a few beers. He was trying to clean out a few items from his safe that needed a new home, and there were a couple that caught my attention. I ended up getting a Winchester pre 64 model 70 fwt in 270. Gun was made in 1961, and apparently has never been fired since it left the factory. Gun is in excellent shape with only a couple of marks on it, and all original. After a few more beers and some thinking time, I offered him $1000 bucks and he took it. I'm not a pre 64 collector, but I think there is still somewhat of a market for them if I decide to sell it. Thoughts on my purchase???
Oh, and the other gun he had, a pre 64 Alaskan in 338 is still bouncing around in my head....

Condition will sell it. Imo, for some reason the 270 doesn't bring ultra bucks but imo the caliber is a fantastic one. 0 -
If you're happy you did okay.
I have a model 70 chambered in 270 made in the mid 50's and it's in excellent shape other than a replaced recoil pad. But in the end it's still just a bolt action rifle and there are just as good or better ones made today. So, if the value to you is there you did fine. I'm partial to mine, but if drinking beer with a buddy and he offered me a grand I would probably let it go, if he's buying the beer of course.0 -
I would have been all over that. Circumstances in my youth had me coveting a pre 64 Model 70 in .270. Many years later I bought a decent one on GB for around $750. I was offered one in .308 once for $2000. New in box. 0 -
Eye of the beholder and all that. I saw pre 64 94's in 30/30 go up stupid prices and back down again. As noted its just an old lever gun LOL. 0 -
Pennies a day over a lifetime, even less as a hand-me-down to family to own a good rifle. You could do an advanced search on completed auctions to get the answer to your question. Factor in sales tax, shipping and other fees that you saved. Nothing wrong with a .270. 0 -
I think you did good and if you can afford it I’d snag the other gun too.

I've spent more than a thousand before and all I came home with was a headache. 0
