My Third Bad Check In 20 Years
I've been doing business on Gunbroker since Gunbroker was brand new, 1999. I received a total of two bad checks, up until this past week, when I got the third. The first two I got were from actual FFL dealers and were payment for firearms. (Bad juju!) Each apologized, said it was a bookkeeping error, and made it right. The third was for a small, non-gun item, not a big deal. We'll see if the buyer makes it right. If he does, fine. If he doesn't, I can live with it.
Three bounced checks in 20 years ain't bad.

I've had 1 since being a Landlord in SC. Women owed money and stiffed me..moved out. Simple here.. had a warrant issued for a bad check. Three yrs later and 90 mile away I get a call from the Sheriff's dept. They had her on the bad check from a stop with a tail light out. Deputy wanted to know if I wanted to come pick up the $200 for the bad check cause he had her in custody at the jail. It was an intentional act because she notified me after the check was written it was no good... and laughed on the phone. She got 30 days. 3 -
That's a pretty good track record, really. I am surprised anyone takes checks though. 3 -
I haven't had a bad check on GB, but I only accept personal checks from forum members, or for small items valued at under $100. A lot of folks won't go to the Post Office for a $25 money order (and I don't blame them) which would mean fewer bids. 0 -
after my wife passed away i had two remaining checkbooks. i learned with online bill paying writing checks was mostly unnecessary. so now i write two checks a year, one for property taxes and one to the IRS.. the first one i wrote to the IRS bounced. not used to writing checks or monthly finances, my wife's job, i had let the bank account balance dip lower than the check amount. take my word for it you never want to write a bad check to the IRS. they penalized me for not paying my taxes, writing a bad check, late fee and anything else they could think of. so now i write two good checks a year and have enough blank checks to finish me up. 0 -
Never got a bad check here on GB. In my years as a landlord had a few. It can be disturbing and make you lose some of the good faith you had in people. Thank God most folks are decent but damn those bastids that bounce thier checks around. 0 -
Whats a check LOL.
I rarely use them anymore as noted occasionally to pay property/auto taxes, I can pay on line but the company they use charges a pretty hefty processing fee, screw that I write that check.

Had you already sent the goods? If you had, and you don't hear anything from this guy, send me your address and I will cover it. I will not stand idly by while a senior GB member who has contributed a lot over the past 20 years gets raked over by a ne'er-do-well! 0 -
Thank you, but it's not necessary. The item was under $30. He'll either make it good or I will become more cautious in my acceptance of checks. 0 -
I have paid a select few sellers by check and never had a problem. Have even had sellers tell me they will take a check based on my FB even when their ads say they don't except checks.
Many people don't realize once you take an out of state or town check to your bank and the check is processed, funds are transferred immediately. If the teller wants to, he can punch in the routing number, amount, and have funds transferred to your account instantly....... that is unless the check is rubber.
Long waiting periods for checks to clear is BS.
I reckon you will have to give the guy a neg FB and he will reciprocate. At least GB will take care of things on your side.

I like checks. I like paying with checks, and I like receiving checks. Here's why:
If I send you a check, and it becomes lost, it doesn't take an act of Congress to replace it. You tell me you haven't been paid, and it's been a month or more. I check my bank account and find the check still outstanding. I send you another check. I DON'T stop payment on the first one. That move costs me about $30 and protects the bank, not me. If the original check shows up forged, I go to the bank and examine the check. If I know it to be forged, I execute a Forgery Affidavit at the bank. That check now becomes the bank's problem, and not mine.
Contrast that with trying to replace a money order.6 -
Here's why I like paying with checks: I can write it out, and send it on it's way. Sometimes it's a week or more before I get to town, so getting a MO is out of the question without making a special trip. It's a 25 mile rounder to town and back. So at $0.54/mile that's $13.50 added to the price of whatever I bought if I was to make a special trip to town to get a MO.
Credit cards are usually a no go when buying stuff from "gun people" as they like to add a percentage to use a cc. None of the rest of the world does that, just gun people. So, I like to pay with a check.3 -
I've still got over 9K worth of worthless checks in my truck. The contractor told me when he gave them to me that I needed to wait a couple days before I deposited them. According to the authorities I talked to, by telling me the checks were not good when he handed them to me, the contractor had broken no laws, and there was nothing I could do about it. He declared bankruptcy about a year that.

This! Only gun people add CC fees. No where else.Horse Plains Drifter said:Here's why I like paying with checks: I can write it out, and send it on it's way. went to harbor freight 2 years ago and bought $130 of goodies...checkout girl refused my check with ID ( only place ever refused me since i opened a back account at age 14) and when i asked to see the manager she said he was NOT there..so used a credit card.....had $$$$$$.00 in that one account..... ???? not happy 0 -
Just bought some cartridge cases on the auction side from Bear762 (Michael Hebert). Only $44 or so and his listing stated he'd take a check so I sent him one. He sent the stuff right out without "holding" my check; less than a week. Great service; I don't know if my 100% feedback helped but I'd like to see more sellers go that way--as has been said it's a lot more convenient than a MO or cashier's check. Unlike others, my bank is only 3 miles away and I don't have to pay a fee for cashier's checks but I can write a check NOW and it's in the mailbox NOW. 0 -
I don't even care if the seller holds my check for two weeks, fine by me.
I even bought stuff from nunn before, and he took my check.
