Woodstove Cooking -
Anyone participate?
I have a big, double door Fisher Grandpa model. Two level flat top. Since I usually have a fire going this time of year, I do not fire up the Stove. I distinctly remember my Grandmother cooking on a big wood fired stove. (Blueberry pancakes every Sunday Morning.) [Wish I had that puppy.]
Hebrew National Hot dogs, and Beans and Weanies last few days. Dogs going again just now.
Will probably be Smoked Sausage and Sauerkraut tomorrow.
I have cooked Whole Turkeys on my Woodstove in previous years. Large Amish Cast Iron Turkey Roaster. Came out excellent.
Anyone?

no cooking, but I used to keep a big pot of water on top woodstove to keep down static, humidify room...... 3 -
I keep a large cast iron Tea Kettle, and four XL Kidney bean cans full of water going on my woodstove, at all times. Just finished cleaning them all out, and refilling them with clean water.

Tougher to control the cooking temperature, but fun and flavorful results. 0 -
Just have to monitor and move the Skillet/Pot to different areas on the stove, and monitor/change adjust the woodfire/heat level. Not that difficult.

Ken, Granny used to set up her ironing board next to wood burning kitchen stove with large cast iron rings on top and cast irons on top of these. Had to be a pro at this or Grandpa's clothes got scorched. Grandpa use to roast his peanuts down in Central, Va. in that old wood burner. 0 -
Have a pot of Cream of Mushroom soup going just now also. Half and half w/a small amount of Butter, salt & pepper.

Back when I had a built in the wall brick fireplace, I used to place heavy foil wrapped potato's, carrots, and beef roast\whole chicken\pork tenderloin, close to the hot coals as I was taming down the flames and logs. I'd include butter, onions, garlic, and seasonings in with all. Always turned out great with that natural smoke flavor.
I would set my kids up with long camping forks where they would roast weenies or small chunks of steak, marshmallows, and make smores. Camping out in the living room during the cold winter months was a fun weekend spent with them when they were young!0 -
Gotta learn how to take care of yourself, when the Power goes out. Just saying.

Heat.. kerosene lantern or candles.. you got water if you have a dipper for the well.. or melt the snow on the wood stove.0 -
Why would you cook a wood stove? 3 -
Grand Ma and aunt cooked with a wood cook stove. Food seem much better then. I would go over after school, about a mile or more walk. Raid the warming cabinet on top for cat head biscuits, better than today's cakes. Yum yum.Would help her churn butter milk sometimes, no matter where you set around the churn, the dasher would spit milk in your eye. Boy was that a long time ago. Home made buttermilk, cow salve butter, and cottage cheese, life don't get much better.

as young kid I remember everyone in the family in Tennessee that's all they had and a old pot belly heating stove .
when I met my wife her parents had one in with the laundry room / catch all room . her mom and dad would use it to slow cook beans and other foods thru out the year but in the winter mostly it also helped keep the place warm .
when my MIL passed some one or group went in and took every thing metal or they could get a nickle for at the scrap yard. the house was back a long lane and we would bet it was some of the neighbors (2nd generation a few had turned to drugs ) who had grew up knowing the family and also the house was empty and had all the time they needed

Cooking some Smoked Kielbasa in a cast iron skillet. Turned them over multiple times. (Cut in to 1" slices.) Added some high end Sauerkraut. Letting it simmer. (After having browned the Sausage.)
Will be good stuff.
Smells Awesome.

I cook large pot of dry beans quite often on mine .. also make coffee.. I have one of those camp fire percolators,, make a good hot pot. The wife cooked a pot of spaghetti sauce last weekend but she cheated,, she got it going in the regular stove then had me move it to the wood heater to simmer all day

I heat my house with wood so the stove goes from November to May. Cook on it sometimes. Everything from popcorn to steak. 0
