What camping or backpacking trips do you have planned this year?

I'll be heading into the Eagle Cap Wilderness of eastern Oregon and if the stars align I will be going into the Sawtooths of Idaho for the first time.

    I'm giving up one of my more troublesome accounts at the end of this month which will allow me to take a real vacation for the first time in eight years. That said I plan to hit the waterfalls a little heavier this year while I'm still relatively young and can still hike a good ways and scramble through the rocks. Of course I will post pics when this takes place :)

    About 7 years ago, and for probably the previous 12 before that, I would have replied "Where we went this week."


    My Bud's and I (90% Prior Military) got out almost every single week, for years. Would leave work, hike in by headlamp, meet up and party till the wee hours. We would hike out at the crack of dawn and go back into work about 1/3 the time. Worst weather imaginable.

    Most of us worked in the Outdoor industry, and had state of the art gear. Most of us were also on various State Search and Rescue teams. High angle Rescue, Swift Water Rescue, Communication and Navigation specialists. Most of us were Wilderness EMT's.


    Good times.


    My Son is carrying the torch now, with a crapload of my gear to help him on his way. He grew up doing adventurous stuff with me.

    I have hiked about half of the 56 miles of the Appalachian Trail through my county. One 18 mile stretch I haven’t done will require an over night camp. Hopefully, I will be able to make 12 or 14 miles, camp, then stumble out the last few miles to my truck.

    Snowmobiles in the Bighorns in February. Bighorn ATV camping in June/July. Glacier National Park in September.

    Sounds like you are going to have a good time.  I will probably take the dogs hiking in the Pisga NF this spring.

    I wish I lived out west but it was not to be, I really liked the PNW so much to do outdoors.

    i want to get out and explore the Everglades national park. Im not sure what that means yet. I will probably try and tie it in with a USPSA sectional match out of Homestead later this year.

    None planned for me and Mrs right now, but my youngest (21) is eager to spread her wings.  Hoping she listens to the old man just a little bit.  She grew up camping and hiking  (but never did any planning , navigation or reconnoitering.  Without a cell phone she is totally lost (even with it, its iffy)  We tried doing Geocaching when they were small just to get them to learn how to use the GPS and navigate.  Older one got it, little one not so much.  She is going to be hurt when she finds out that you really cant rent a car until you are 25 without getting bent over. 

    Paper map and compass no way.  I tried....  I got the navigation gene from my Dad and Pop,  she did not... :-(

    A 10-14 day pack trip into the Southfork of the Flathead in “The Bob” in Montana. This trip will not be “just a pack trip”, but to be able to fish for Bulltrout as this is one of the few places you can legally target them albeit catch and release. Bucket list type trip if you will.

    We will access from trailheads near Ovando,Seeley lake, or Condon, dependent on how far upriver the Bulltrout have made it on their spawning run at the time of our departure. Should end up being close to a 90-100 mile loop or a 70 or so mile ride through, if I can find someone to shuttle my truck and trailer over around by Hungry Horse dam and up to Meadow creek trailhead on the Southfork.

    Hope to be accompanied by Grandson and my Best Friend, his son and our Veterinarian, and a ER Dr friend. All of which we try to have a yearly trip somewhere.

    But, I have warned my Bride that this particular trip has been 3 years in the making and if any or all can’t make it, then I’m loading 3 head of mules, my dog Jim and I’m headed across the pass by myself. Lord willing and the creek don’t rise.

    Backyard weenie roast 5-6 times. Maybe sleep in the pickup seat a night or two if I can't make it to a motel. Spent all the camping time I wanted in 2010.

    July thru Sept in the backcountry of Idaho. Fishing the high mountain lakes, and looking to catch a Golden Trout which is the next trout on my list. I can cover 120 miles in a day on the ATV, and I have a inflatable boat that I can take, and I can and return to my travel trailer at night. That is roughing it for me at my age.

    These days I try to avoid sleeping rougher than Holiday Inn, but will be at a hostel in Cuba.

    I'm not sure yet. Probably July though. I will try to keep you notified.

    Back in the early '70's I was at Steamboat Lake and Francis Lake but haven't been up there since then.  At the time the fish were tough to catch and stunted.  Not much feed in those high mountain ice cold lakes.  It might be completely different now, but back then the fishin' wasn't that great.  The scenery, though, was dang tough to beat!
    If any of you are planning a trip up there bring a sidearm (like you wouldn't anyway!) just in case of cougars.  We're about out of deer due to the dang things.
