Who shoots a 300 black Out???
I have decided that I want a second caliber in one of my ARs. I think I want the 300 BO. If you are using the 300 BO what do you think of it?? What seems to be its strengths/weakness'?? Your thoughts on wheather it makes a good deer round??
I can't seem to make up my mind which way to go, buy a 300 upper or buy a very good 300 barrel and rebarrel one of my existing ARs. Your thoughts on this. Thanks for the good ideas/thoughts coming my way!!

I had a 300 blackout I was using for hogs wasn't that impressed with it I traded it for a 6.5 Grendel and for hogs I've had much better results especially past 100 yards

Hey Savage. Do you get to do many hog hunts? Why were you not impressed with the 300 blackout? Range? Penetration?

I do not have a 300 BO, but in the past I have used the cartridge, it was called the 300 whisper. IMO, if you are not going to shoot heavy subsonic bullets through a suppressor there are better options than the 300 BO. As savage mentioned the 6.5 grendel is one of them. A buddy has one and it's a solid performer.
With that said I do know people that kill deer with the 300 BO.

I go about 3 times a year to South Carolina and hunt the swamp area even with good hit we were losing a lot of hogs because they would make it to the swamps and then dying. Just seems the 6.5 anchors them a lot better

The .300 Blackout was designed as a (subsonic) suppressed AR platform, for up close and personal engagement's. If that is not your purpose, I would suggest that there are other/better platforms out there.
I do not feel the need to own one.

I have two: One with an 8 inch barrel and another with a 16 inch. I am interested in suppressed firearms, where the 300 BO excels. Side by side comparison with 16 inch barrels leads me to believe that at ranges below 300 meters, the 5.56 and 300 are evenly accuracy. Beyond 300 meters the 5.56 seems to hold an edge, at least when using the typical M4 platform. Suppressed is an entirely different matter: the 300 shines with a can attached, and using super short barrels doesn't lead to any of the issues (which are numerous) trying to suppress a 5.56mm rifle. The 300 is a specialty/specialist cartridge designed with a single purpose in mind, and it works great for that purpose. A 6.5 Grendel is a better hunting round than the 300 BO, and quite a few folks consider it equal to a .308 in many applications.

I will admit that I got my choices down to either a 6.5 or the 300 before I thought the 300 might be the best choice. So maybe I should look at the 6.5 again.

I have to agree. Mainly because to go subsonic, you mainly have to use heavy bullets. If you want your bullets to expand, they have to be light and go fast. I have yet to see any good expansion on heavy bullets even at above sonic.
The other issue is accuracy is just not that great. If you reload, powders choices are limited and you can spend hundreds of dollars trying to find a bullet powder combo that works.
At one time I had 5 uppers in various twists and length, I have been trading them off.
MY advice is go with the 6.8 SPC if you want to hunt hogs or anything larger.

I don't have a BlackOut,but I had a Contender in 300 Whisper and I never thought about them being the same round.I killed a deer with the 300 Whisper Contender on its first hunt.

I have hunted mainly with 300 BLK for the last few years.
I have several rifles but the two I go to are SBR's. 8.5 inch with a large scope and a silencer - loaded with heavy bullets. This setup is rather heavy so I use it from a blind and go for heart shots.
The other SBR is 12 inch and I only shoot light super sonic bullets. This gun has a small scope and is my walk around gun.
I try to keep both within their range limitations.

about two / three years ago I got on the assemble a rifle / pistol thing during the winter ( too many dang parts new and used on the auctions and PSA sales ) I built several 5.56 then decided to go with a different caliber so two 300 black outs a rifle and pistol were put together then a 308 was the last one I did . but I can not say much about good or bad I have not shot any of them enough to make any calls good or bad . dang that reminds me I need to pick up a few lowers to hang on too while still inexpensive and the dems have not outlawed

I've used the 300AAC for several years as a play toy. 2018 & 2019 we used AR "pistols" in 300AAC for actual hunting. Our intent was to use suppressed sub-sonic to allow multiple kills w/o spooking the entire field of deer.
Didn't really happen that way as the hit deer ran spooking the others. In 2018, the available ammo performed poorly and 2 hit deer escaped and were lost. In 2019 we were able to find ammo with better terminal performance resulting in 2 one shot kills using subsonic and 2 using supersonic ammo.
My thoughts are the 300AAC is a "niche" cartridge and that niche is very narrow. Even with supersonic ammo, the range is limited. Not sure what it's really good for beyond circumventing the regulations allowing handgun hunting during a special season.
The "fun part" of the cartridge is being able to SEE the sub-sonic projectiles fly to the target. It happens regularly given proper lighting conditions.
For actual hunting use, the 6.8 SPC is FAR better based on actual in the field experience.
