USS Doris Miller

The next Ford class super carrier is going to be named after Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller. He was on the USS WVA during the attack on Pearl Harbor. His action station was destroyed so he helped evac causalities to include his Capitan then manned a 50 cal MG and shot a Jap planes until he ran out of ammo and was ordered to evacuate the ship which he did while helping wounded sailors get off.

He was awarded the Navy Cross and later was killed in action. This is the second ship named after him.


Dorie was from Waco TX where he played football and was a fullback.

The US Navy is expected to honor a World War II hero when a new aircraft carrier is named for Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller.

The announcement is expected to be made at Pearl Harbor Monday, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Friday.

Miller was recognized for manning a machine gun on the USS West Virginia and returning fire against Japanese planes during the December 7 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

At that time in the Navy a Bl*ckman was not allowed to man a gun.

    Agree Ricci, I would rather see it named after a guy who kicked ass and paid the ultimate sacrifice than some politician.


    and yes I know Ford and JFK were in the USN.
