A lot of felt recoil has to do with the fit of the rifle.
The heaviest recoiling gun I have ever shot is either a 500 Jeffery or a 458 Lott with 500gr solids max load. The Jeffery was fairly stiff but I shot the Lott way more times working up loads. About 20 rounds per session was all I could take before I got a little gunny. A 378 Weatherby is no pussy cat either😉

I've shot large caliber rifles and shotguns in a wide array of chamberings. The 2 worst kicking, in terms of felt recoil (at the bench) were a Marlin Guide Gun in 450 Marlin and a 835 Mossberg with 3.5" turkey loads.

when younger I wanted the biggest hardest kicking rifle ( with in reason $$$$ ) I wanted a 458 win mag for years as a kid just because.. I found one when I was about 20 years old and still have it . when we have back yard shoot people still like to say they shot it . maybe just me but a 3 1/2 12 ga kicks about the same . the shotgun just not as rare of a bird to shoot

Interesting. Was just now remembering the recoil energy from my first and unforgettable experience with a 12 gauge, double barrel at that, with both barrels firing at the same time under the instructions of my tutor...on my 9/10 year old shoulder. I was initially upright, but hitting the ground in a sitting position with legs spread wide, and the shotgun held across my lap with both hands, must have happened in the exact same instant! My mind at this time was not working right. 😁
