That used to be my favorite hunting back in the day. First gun I purchased for myself - a Savage mdl. 24 .22mag over a 20ga. was perfect.
We could make $$ clearing out groundhogs from freshly mown hay fields. Wait for a few to be out, everyone picks a different target/Chuck, coordinate the shot. I have a picture soemewhere, of me at around 14-15 years of age, holding a Chuck in one hand, and my Uncles scoped .243 in the other. One of my best long range shots. A fur piece. I was pretty damn proud, and impressed the heck out of the older guys present. If I can locate the picture, I will post it.

Not many wood chucks left around here since the coyotes got established. I haven't shot one in over 20 years. It does seem like I see a few more than I did. I don't know but maybe they learned a little about getting along in coyote country.
When the coyotes got here and started to fill the area about four plus decades ago they were a new threat to the local wildlife. Of course it didn't take them long to populate and after they got established there was more of them then than now. Then the food supply and coyote populations stabilized. Now the bobcats are finding their place and it all changes again.

I love ground hog hunting. Have quite a few hog guns. Plus they are very yummy. Got a couple of good recipes if any one wants them. They get you eye hand trigger finger ready for deer season. Good pratice for young hunters.

Aim small, miss small.
Pretty much why I qualified as "Expert," in the Army - every single time I qualified. I was shocked how accurate and easy it was to hit pop up targets at extreme yardage (3-400 yards) with only a 2-3 second pop up, with a properly sighted in M16. I'd get 38 out of 40 easy.

I had that rifle in 223, I bought it because I hated my M-16. It would shoot factory Rem ammo sub 1/4 minute. I never got it to shoot that good with my reloads.

When Dad died I sold the 742 30/06 I had bought him for the identical 6mm you posted. Shot a lot of ground hogs with it.

Nah.. I have shot them with a 30/06 but the velocity from a 25/06 makes a great red mist.

Same here. With a side mount scope. When I was about 15 years old, laying in the grass waiting for a shot on a woodchuck. Guy & girl drove up behind, didn't see me. They laid down about 25 ft away & disrobed, started going at it. Course that's when the woodchuck popped up. Thought it might be weird to fire, but I'd been there a long time so "BANG!!!" Got up to check the results - maybe they just saw "Deliverance" but I heard car doors slam and them speed off pretty quick. :)

Taking out the alfalfa bandits on the Boise River at CritterGitter's place, with a M39 Finn Mosin. Using 46grn short range practice ammo. Bullet is a hollow copper jacket that leaves the muzzle at close to 4000fps. A solid body hit would toss a 7-9lb chuck a good 15ft into the river.
