Win 10 updates and Win 7 Dies
There were two big updates to Windows 10 last night for those who get auto updates. One of them completely replaces the MS Edge browser with one based on Chromium. It supposedly minimizes several kinds of tracking data, browsing history recording, and other security flaws of the original Edge (which tracked your browsing and personalized ads mercilessly.) It's still called Edge, but it's all new.
Estimates are that Chrome is the browser used by between 75% and 90% of all internet users. So this change affects only the 27 or 28 people who actually used Edge because they didn't know any better.
Personally, I used Edge exactly once - to download Firefox the first time I fired up Win 10 on this desktop. I much prefer Firefox to Chrome, although I do use both.
On a related note, Win 7 officially died today. No more updates, no more support, and no more security patches - and Win 7 was a security sieve. If you used Win 7, you should seriously consider going to 10.

I have an older W7 Sony that was gifted to me. I tried to put W10 on it and it crashed. I tried to go back to W7 and it bricked. I thought I made recovery disks for it when I got it but I couldn't find them. Days of trying I finally got a disk from my Samsung W7 box to wake it up enough to get started. I managed to re-down the Sony stuff and get the machine fully up to date with only me on it last week. I made new recovery disks. I got the last up dates for W7 on both machines yesterday.
I had did the free upgrade W10 on the Samsung, but change it back years ago because it dogg the box down. I'll reinstall 10 on it.
I think I'll some sort of Ubuntu duel boot on the Sony.
The free upgrade deal for W7 to W10 still works, they haven't turned it off when the deal expired.

One of my laptops has runs Windows 10 and has both Edge and IE. Like yourself, I seldom use Edge- in fact I seldom use that laptop. My desktop runs Windows 8.1 and has three monitors (I'd like four if the fourth could be supported). Each monitor uses a different operating system: IE on the main monitor, Chrome on the second, and Firefox on the third, although that monitor is used mostly for reading text, or looking at photos and maps. IE is no longer supported and is getting harder to use with each passing day. Chrome seems to be the winner in the browser wars.

If I didn't insist on having Quicken 2010 for all my financial stuff, I'd switch to Linux Mint for my desktop. I tried running Quicken via the Wine app on Mint (on a spare desktop) but it was kludgy and didn't import my data correctly. Quicken 2010 was the last version not tailored for smart phone use, and I will NOT own a smart phone.
I don't think there's a personal finance app on Google that's as intuitive and easy as Quicken, or I'd switch to a Chromebook exclusively. Plus, my printer isn't Chromebook compatible so I'd have to replace that, too. And it's almost new.
At one point, I had five computers, three of them laptops. I had Win 7 on one laptop, Linux Lite on another, and Win 10 on the third, plus Linux Mint on the spare/backup desktop. Wiped the laptops and gave them away. Bought the Chromebook and a GPS/tablet that runs Android. Have my Quicken on the two desktops, but the Mint one is stored away for emergencies. So I'm stuck with Windows.

Planned obsolescence on Microsofts part. A couple of years ago I had to buy a new desktop when Vista became obsolete. As the new editions of Windows come out older computers lack the ability to run them. Win for Microsoft as they get paid for every new computer with the current Windows installed. I will admit that after getting used to 10 I have had virtually no problems. That was a fairly major update but so far so good. Bob

I have been using Firefox for a year or so but Edge is also on my laptop. I've never used Edge but did a startup with it. How do I tell if I have the new version? BTW, I do have auto installed updates.

If your 'pooter updated and replaced Edge, you'll see that the blue "e" down in the lower left is now a blue and green wave icon.

Edge was quite possibly one of the dumbest MSFT programs to date. And that includes Microsoft Bob.

It looks like I have ver. 44 for win 10. I don't see the icon. Is this the new one?

I just downloaded and installed the new edge. Very slow to download. Installed without crashing my system, yea.
Not sure I'll use it but I'll try it some to see.
