Savage 720 Shotgun

A friend brought me a very nice condition pre war(I think) Savage 720 shotgun to work on because it was not cycling like it should.I took it apart to clean it and it was clean but no sign of any lube. A couple of squirts of non detergent 30W and it runs like a top.The owner is not a gun guy and the Savage belonged to a great uncle . I would not be surprised if it had not been shot for 50 years.Anyway the old guns mag would hold 2 shells making it a 3 shot.I quickly looked and did not see a plug.I was under the impression that all the Browning A-5s and clones like this Savage and Remington 11s were 4+1 capacity guns.Should I look again for a plug or is this a 2+1 gun?

    Do not lube the outside of the mag tube!

    Just a thought..Back in the day, Remington offered the first of their"Sportsman" series..Their Model 11 was offered with an optional 2+1 capacity..It had a modified mag tube, and slightly different size forend..I don't know what parts are interchangeable between the Remington and Savage, but maybe that was a possible way of making the Savage a dedicated 3shot..I believe the Savage was only offered with 4+1..

    The 720 was a 5-shot. The 726 was a 3-shot.

    If the forearm is retained by a bolt instead of the familiar mag cap it's a 3 shot.

    As Ambrose said, 720 is 5, 726 is 3. If it is indeed a 720 someone has installed either 726 or Remington Sportsman parts.
