My daughter took the NCLEX today
She had to answer 111 questions. And I'm fairly certain that she passed.
For those unfamiliar, the NCLEX uses a pretty complicated scoring mechanism. The test is computerized and constantly making an assessment as to minimum competency required. Essentially you have to get to a point in the question answering process that you are answering the questions they throw at you at a rate better than 50%. The kicker is, if you answer a question correctly, they give you a harder question for the next question.
The minimum number of questions you can get is 75. If the test can't figure out if you have passed or failed by that point it keeps giving you questions until it can figure it out.

You need to "pass" the NCLEX-RN, but what score exactly does that mean? Unlike most exams, the NCLEX is adaptive, so calculating your NCLEX-RN score is complex.
For reference, when my wife took the exam, she passed and answered something like 80 questions or so. To be fair, her graduating class was one of the first ones to use this computerized format and the exam has changed some from when she took it. I don't think the questions got harder if you answered a question correctly, for example.
Anyway, my daughter was pretty nervous going in, because her roommate had just had to answer all the questions... and she's a 4.0 student (so is my daughter)!

Just an update: if there was any remaining doubt about her score, she got her license in the mail today. (Also got her notification of pass a couple days ago, but I neglected to update) 6 -

My daughter took the test about 10 years ago as I am sure it has changed since and the computer test kicked off at the very minimum number of questions you had to answer to pass. I think then it was 75 and my sisters daughter had like a 78 as both were the top or at the top of their class. My daughter has been an RN ever since and just won nurse of the year at the hospital she works at... Congratulations to your daughter as she want have any problem finding a good high paying job. That is an occupation I highly respect as I don't know if I could do.. A good RN with experience a lot of times is better than the doctor....
If I remember correctly there were like 50 nursing students that started the program the same time my daughter and at graduation there were about ten that walked the graduation line. Of those probably only a small number are still in nursing as I know one for-sure did not last long that was in the final graduation group. Working as a nurse will make or break you pretty fast...3 -

I took the test the first year everyone took the adaptive computer version. The previous year they had tested a test group but not everyone. IIRC there were 80 questions. 75 actual test questions and 5 trial questions considered for future use, we didn't know which was which and it really didn't matter. I knew when I clicked on the 80th question I was done and the test ended as I expected. It took longer to sign in than to test.
I was asked one question that contained something I didn't know and it was a scenario that included an anesthesia drug I was not familiar with. However the drug it's self didn't influence the primary issue or the action needed so the answer wasn't hard to determine. The test questions contain a lot of information and it's your job to discern the primary issue and actions needed. Focus on the primary issue and the answers are simple. ABC simple as that.
While everyone else studied there arses off I went fishing, slept well, ate a light breakfast and tested. If you know the correct priority ladder and the theory/reasoning involved it's not difficult to pass the tests. Apply the same in practice and you'll be making good decisions r/t the patients. Do not get sidelined by peripheral information.3 -

I had to take a test that sounds just like the one you have described. Cant remember the name, but the entire test went beyond what you read and remembered or memorized. The test went much further and tested your ability to use what you learned to solve problems. Throws various scenarios at you and asks for the best answer. Problems become more difficult as test progresses.
Absolutely the most difficult test ever. Scoring was a mere pass or fail. No in-betweens. I passed and please congratulate you daughter.
