1917 - The Movie
Saw it last night. Special screening. All I can say is WOW! I have no idea how they did that continuous filming, but it is simply astounding. There are only two scenes, really. Each one over an hour with no cuts, no camera angle changes, broken only by a brief black screen when the character was unconscious.
Kudos for correct equipment and usage. I'm no expert but everything seemed spot on to me. There is some CGI, naturally, but it's seamless and not at all obvious. Mostly in the background, as with biplanes flying in the distance. Truly an award-winning performance by the two main characters.
The dialog and emotions portrayed also vividly and accurately depict the mind's acuteness versus numbness that happens in real battle. It's an extremely good movie.
Don't miss it. On the big screen.

No, you really do want to see it in a theater. I don't pad Hollyweird's wallet any more than absolutely necessary - I see maybe two movies a year, often less. But this one is a big screen must.
Trust me.

Everything I've read about it is that it's a great movie.
I won't see it in a theater as in 8 months (or less) it will be on TV.

Will be watching it when it hits VUDU. On my 70" that is 8' from me with Dolby DTS surround receiver, Polk Audio speakers and Klipsch 12" sub. Only go to a theater if it is IMAX and even then very rarely. But looking forward to seeing this movie.

I guess that's the price to pay for living in a small town, right? Probably outweighed by many other advantages.

Okay Rocky, I'm one of those that rarely, like it's been 12 years or more, go to the theater. But based on your recommendation think I'll load up and go. I've never taken my 13 y/o son to a movie, may as well make a war movie the first. He goes to the movies with his mother and his brothers, but he'll be a bit bewildered if I take him.

Okay, went and seen the movie today. Good movie, glad I seen it in a theater. Good recommendation Rocky. My kid was surprised to go to a movie with dad. Agree the gear and such was period correct from my limited observatory knowledge.
On a side note. I did not care for the 20 minutes plus of advertisements that ran after the listed starting time of the movie. The kid working the counter got to hear about it. I wasn't mean to him and told him I know he only works there and doesn't make the decisions but if he is in a staff meeting he could mention that this costumer didn't care for spending $23 to watch commercials for over 20 minutes. That I expected a little advertising but that it was poor customer service to have to listen to loud advertising for that length of time. I seriously considered leaving before the movie even starting and asking for my money back. The movie itself wasn't too hard on the ears, but the advertisements were giving me a headache.

SCOUTS, that's the way it is these days. It's also why I also go to see very few movies. Maybe two a year. And I always bring earplugs for those damn commercials and previews, which are even louder than the commercials.
I glad you went but sorry it cost you that much. (I paid only $14 for the two of us at senior/military rate.) Any comments from your son?

It was $23 and change for both of us. I went to an evening movie because I was in the notion to go and it was there. I'm sure a mid-day movie would be less. A movie every 12 years or so isn't going to break me.
My son liked the movie. He is quite interested in history and was paying attention to the equipment, tanks, planes etc.. This also fit in because we've been studying WWI and WWII lately. He is home schooled and was looking forward to learning about these wars. When his courses went over them he was disappointed at how little they covered. So I've been going over it with him, reading , watching documentaries and discussing them.

Ours was a 7:10 pm showing, too. On a Thursday evening, as an advanced showing, pre-purchase online required. Regular evening showings run from $8 to $20 per ticket there, depending on regular, deluxe, or luxury seating, 2D versus 3D, etc.
(The luxury seats are recliners with tables, cup holders, and food delivery available right to the seat. Very lah-de-dah. But even the regular seats are comfy, rock a bit, and have decent leg room.)

When I think about WW1 I think of what a waste it was. It was fought over nothing, caused Millions of deaths from the war and the flu that followed and brought about the jacked up problems we have now in the middle east. It gave us communism and laid the ground work for Hitler and WW2 and emboldened the Japanese to control China.
It was the Last gasp of the Imperial Nations using their people as cannon fodder, Thank God we didn't allow the French or British to control our part of it and use our soldiers as replacements in their units(which is what they wanted to do).
I am glad ya'll enjoyed the movie, I doubt I will go see it because the theater is far away and expensive and I don't want to be cooped up in a room with a bunch of people.

Can't really blame you, Sam. A room full of "I ain't getting no damn flu shot" plague carriers is scary. I risked it but I get the shot - and I try to avoid touching anything in a public place.

I had some woman who was coughing like she had whooping cough chasing me around a grocery store like a zombie out for brains.........Every where I went she would show up and start coughing.
The flu is bad here in NC several old and young have died with it.

Wife & I went yesterday. I found some of the actions interesting. When the two main characters were getting ready to leave on the mission, they each took a clip out of their gear and stripped the cartridges into their rifles. Why not two clips?! Those Enfields held 10 rounds and the clips were 5. And why were their rifles not fully loaded before then? And since they were going into harms way, why not load their rifles with borrowed cartridges from the guys that were sitting around and keep their own ammo in reserve? I know that's nit-picking and it's a movie but it bothered me. ( I've been called pedantic here before). And when the hero got into a fire fight at the canal, I think I counted him firing 7 shots and I didn't see him reaching for a clip then, either. Oh, well; as my wife says, "It's just a movie."

I finally saw the latest Star Wars the other day. It's was ok.

I was disappointed with the movie. Several unrealistic Hollywood inspired parts. I have watch it twice, and consider it an OK movie. The battle scenes were totally unrealistic for the hell the WW1 soldiers actually went through. The scene in the burning city at night with the French girl and him running away was a terrible scene to add, very fake and Hollywood. I just read Rock of the Marne, and its story is way better than this one. I felt way more intensity during my reading. I actually waited until it came out in the library. I prefer movies at home for multiple reasons, probably the one that put me over were the cell phones and jerks talking during the movies.

There have been a few movies that you have to go to a theater to get the full experience. The one that quickly comes to mind was Tora, Tora, Tora.

l have seen ''1917'' twice. l liked it both times too. Equipment is very very correct.. lnteresting that some wwl battlefields are STILL off limits.

One theater here not only has nice seats they serve beer. Never been there, have not been in a theater since 2019, and won't be for a while yet.
