104 years ago today
My Mother was born in Headrick, Oklahoma. She was the second of eleven children. I miss you, Mom, but think of you everyday! Thanks for being such a superb mother.

Very nice kimi! I often find some humor thinking about how broke I'd be if I still had to buy birthday candles for my late dads B\D cake! I recon that our minds have to find some kind of "happy places" as the years of grieving continue along.
My grandma had a photo of my dad sitting on his grandpa's lap, taken around 1917 when dad was 3 yrs old. His grandpa was a Civil War veteran (Union Army) and fought in several major battles of the war incl. Gettysburg. Sadly, Picture went missing after grandma's passing.
I find it comforting, just how close we come to touching history.

When public education was a one room school. I have my Fathers 8th grade diploma. Common sense was more than a college degree is today.

My Grandma was born in 1902. One of my favorite conversations I had with her in about 1980 was when she decided to talk about all the advancements she has witnessed in her life.
Automobiles, Motor Bikes, enclosed automobiles, airplanes, boat motors, passenger planes, speed boats, luxury cars, luxury boats, Cross Continent Travel, Overseas flights, modern stoves and refrigeration, Gas Forced air heat, Space Travel, Man on the moon, etc, etc, etc.........
It must of really been something to watch all that change come along in one lifetime.

Thank you. I guess that my long time interest in genealogy keeps my mind traveling back to the past much more so than the typical old person. Finding such humor in buying candles is certainly a happy thought...and we can never get too many of them!
That is a very nice picture of your GG Grandparents. Is the medal shown for his service in the Great American War? If so, that makes it extra special.
My paternal Grandma had a picture of my G Grandpa in his Confederate uniform, but that one burned up with her home in Nacogdoches back in the 60s. Luckily, we have one of him in civvies that has been the source of lots of copying!
Below is a picture of my maternal G Grandparents. One of the places they lived was in/near Ponta, Texas. Grandpa was born about 1872. His Daddy was a veteran of the Great American War. Their families had roots in several South Carolina and Alabama (places) including SW Arkansas before settling in East Texas.

Your grandma was of my father's generation and they certainly did see a lot of change in their time. Looking back, any one on one time with a parent or grandparent was generally, truly special. My mother did very little travel until her later years, but seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. Just think of all the tales you can pass on to everyone, Ed! I mean, you really have had some grand experiences, and have told us of a few of them...taking us there with you every time!!!! That does make life all the better my friend, thank you!
Wanted to tell you that a lot of folks from where you have roots migrated to North Carolina back in the 1750s!!!! 😃

She was from a socially prominent family in the county . One of the few in her area to go to college . Family history reports that she was the first woman in the county/town to dare to ride a horse thru town sitting astride the horse rather than riding side-saddle as was proper . She likely would have been run out of town on a rail for such but her father was the county sheriff so she got away with it . Lots of changes in her world

Interesting story, It reminded me of one about my paternal great grandmother and her riding horses. One story has it that she could ride and shoot from horseback as well as any man. Another has her galloping toward the house, jumping the front fence, wheeling about and jumping the fence once again. Her name was Lucinda Richmond, called Lou. I do have a picture of her in old age looking stern and fairly well dressed, (my sister was a prolific family genealogist and found lots of very old pictures of our ancestors). I doubt that she was wearing a dress or sitting side saddle at such times, though. 😀

My grandfather's sister broke her leg when she was a young girl & it was badly set. After that she rode astride with a long skirt over her pants. She liked to joke that she was the scandal of the county.
