Metal Roofing Question

I am going to tear the shingles off my back porch,put down black paper screw down some purlins and metal roofing.Should the purlins be 1x4 or 2x4? Thanks

  we have always had good results with 1x2 be sure to take into consideration the height of the metal on the down side where the guttering will go. to high could be a problem.

  Buddy, there’s a new kind of fabric underlayment that’s grey. I forgot what it’s called. I don’t think they use the black paper anymore.

  What is under the shingles, solid sheathing such as plywood and is porch open to the outside, not inclosed.

  Titanium is the underlayment of choice now.

  Plywood sheathing under 2 layers of shingles that I will tear off to check the condition of the sheathing.Its an enclosed mud room coming in off the deck.I looked up the new synthetic underlayment and I may buy a roll and do this room and the front screen porch too.Thanks for the advice.

  If it is plywood sheathed there is no need for the 1 X 4.

  Use the good underlayment, titanium is the correct stuff. Depending on what type of metal you use might be best to use plain old roofing nails to tack down the underlayment, button caps sometimes will show through, bumps in the metal.

  Caution, metal will sweat thus the reason for best underlayment.
