I like maps
I ordered a laminated 50"x32" Rand McNally map of the U.S. yesterday from Amazon and just finished hanging it on the wall over my desk. Nice map,big and colorful and easy to read. I counted and I have visited forty states and lived in five. Ours is a big beautiful country. I have folks call from all over to talk about firearms and it's gonna be cool to see exactly where they are so to speak. Maybe I will order a world map to put on another wall.

I've got an older Rand Mcnally I carry when we go on trips, wife gives me hell as she has GPS stuff on her phone, only thing is she doesn't have phone service everywhere, but I have map service everywhere............my only complaint some of the smaller backroads aren't marked as good as they used to be, or had name changes for the new 911 services.... 0 -

Ricci, i too like maps. i have tried to teach all my children one simple fact of navigation, have an idea of where you are on the face of the earth. look at a map occasionally look at a globe, understand where you are. know that alabama is east of mississippi and louisiana is to the west. i really believe kids are no longer taught geography. how can you get thru life not knowing where you are. I know, i know, GPS. well i call BS. get you a map. rant over, thanks Ricci, i think ill have another drink now. 0 -
Many moons ago, our eldest son came home on leave from the USMC. We were sitting out on the back porch having a beer, when he said "I want to apologize for taking you for granted." Me: Huh?
Him: I always just assumed that EVERYONE'S Dad taught them to shoot, to use a map and a compass.

GPS may lie to you, or lose connection. Learn your pace count, use an M2 lensatic, read and USE a map- you are in good shape. No, kids are NOT taught geography- or land navigation (unless you are a Boy Scout of child of a veteran)0 -
I used to offer directions to people coming to visit & warn them not to follow their GPS. Then, when they arrive, they complain that their GPS sent them either the wrong way or on some twisty, backwoods gravel road. Now, I tell them not to waste my time if they're just going to use their GPS anyway. My brother-in-law arrived 1-1/2 hours late & said that they were closing mountain roads behind him due to the weather. I told him that if he had listened & looked at a map, he would have been on time & wouldn't have gone through the mountains. Since he didn't have a map, my wife gave him one of ours. Of course, the know-it-all probably just tossed it. 0 -
My dad taught me to read maps at an early age. I also love to pull up Google maps and survey the surrounding countryside. 0 -

Me too, I love maps and try to tell kids/grandkids/younger neighbor kids that still know how to feed calves, what maps can do.

I have a giant S.D. map and a giant world map hung in my gun room and a bunch os topo maps of the area around here, ordered from all usgs 0 -
Another cartophile here, starting before but culminating with my Air Force job. Had to be able to plot coordinates down to 100 meters - and occasionally 10 meters using nothing but old topo maps. From the air. Lives literally depended on getting it right. If you're taught well, looking at a topo map is almost like seeing a photograph of the terrain. 0 -

I have 7.5 minutes topo maps of our area, ordered from usgs. Very informative. I've found some good hunting spots studying them. Even found a couple of small isolated ponds on state property I didn't know about.0
