Christmas Present ?
My grandson Cameron and i are very close. He is 15 and we spend a lot of time together. He will want to come hang out even if i am not doing anything.
If i do any work around the house he wants to help. I have taught him alot. I have always treated him like an adult even at 10 or 11.
Now if/when he has problems he calls me and talks to me about it. I know things i would rather not know. Im not happy he tried an e cigarettes with what i went through. However i do not fuss at him but explain why its not a good idea.
All the other adults fuss and i explain why its a bad idea.
Anyway he spent a little over 100 dollars on my Christmas present from his money.
I do not want him to spend his money on me. I am truly happy that i am the only adult he bought a present for. His parents buy the presents and put his name and his sisters name on the normal presents.
He spent his saved money on me and i would rather he spend it or save it for himself however i cant hurt his feelings.
Im guessing i am going to give him 100 dollars or more to help me do something to pay him back. I do not know how to give him back his money without hurting his feelings. Although i like the knife he gave me.
I just do not want him spending his money on me.
I guess im going to get him to help me do something and give him an extra 100 for helping.

Cameron sounds like a fine young man.
It's good for a kid to realize how much pleasure he really receives by giving rather than receiving.
Enjoy the knife!
Sounds like hes on the right track.0 -
Awesome. I think both of you are very lucky. Does he have one of the tax exempt college funds? That would be a good place to put money. How about tools. Maybe a electronic kit you can both build. Raspberry Pi has some interesting projects.
Last year I gave my great great nephew a toy set "my first circuits" at 2, this year a Kindle 7 with a subscription to educational and fun stuff. He loved both.0 -
+1 what Ed said. And you answered your own question Dave. Don't try to pay him back directly or offer to. He got a lot of pleasure out of getting you that present and giving it to you. Sure you can give him extra here and there, but not all at once.
Well done by both of you. Be proud grandpa.0 -
Start a college fund for him. 0 -
It could be somewhat of a "one off". He had more money than sometimes, and/or you guys were really close right now. Don't worry, he's about the age where they start disliking everyone.
Like mentioned above, don't just give it back at once. He'll know why.
My best friend is (oddly) my wife's brother. I hadn't ever gotten him a gift in the 20 years I'd known him (to that point). He offhandedly mentioned he wanted another of his favorite knife but he had researched and the name was bought and it all went over to China. So, after some research, I figured out how to ID it from the new production. I searched for a while and finally found one. I bought it and gave it to him on a camping trip (which was his birthday weekend). What is funny is his wife's dad was there and he asked me a ton of questions. After which he started collecting all those that we liked from that era.
Since I hurt my back many years ago, he has done quite a few things for me that I no longer am able to do. I have also hunted mostly his land for the past decade. He likes looking at some of my new guns when we get together. So, a year ago at Christmas, I got him something I have known he wanted ever since we first met. I 5 put new (to him) rifles on the bed and he looked them over, checking them each out one by one. When he got to the heavy barreled stainless/synthetic Rem 700 VSSF AND that it was chambered in 22-250 Rem, he said "Man, I have always wanted one exactly like this, especially the caliber". I said whew, that's good because it is yours. He just stood there in disbelief. Then was like, this is mine? You are giving me this one? He didn't tear up, but most everyone else there did. He was fighting it hard not to. lol0
