Another coyote hunting question?!?

So for a beginner are the electronic calls the best way to go??

If so is there a reliable brand that seems to do the job??

I was at Midway looking at prices and they are all over the place, from the el cheapo special to the "Are you kidding me? That's more than I paid for my last rifle!"

    Been awhile but my hunting buddy used what sounded like a rabbit in distress call! Can't remember just what it was but it really got their attention. Hand operated or mouth?? Can't remember. BIG thing to remember is most every time you saw them out in front they always went down wind to see if what they heard smelled the same ;)

    From my admittedly limited experience with the electronic calls , they are much like scopes . More money equals better performance. That said small and cheap can and does get you started

    I haven't used the electronic calls, so I have no recommendation. When I used the tapes the quality of the player made a difference. You could call a few critters with a cheap single speaker desk top player. But if I used a better quality stereo player I called in more critters. I had an Emerson and a Sony, the Sony out performed the Emerson.

    Sound quality matters, I do not know what a quality system will cost but I would guess most of them will call in critters, some more than others.

    I am NO expert but when I go I have a "rabbit" on a stake that quivers and a rabbit squeal call and I am within 30 yards, concealed of the decoy rabbit. IF they are coyotes around they will investigate, but if they are not "close" buy I can be there for 2 hours and not see anything.

    Son uses a FoxPro while I use a Primos. Each has slightly different sounds & features but both call in a similar number of coyotes. His cost in the $300 range and I got mine on sale from Midway for $150-175. Speaker size/quality is as important as anything as a "tinny" sound doesn't work well.
    There are other more expensive units but I 'm not spending a grand for something I only use 25 times a year.

    It may sound crazy, but I went javalina hunting a few times, and a javalina call brings the coyotes RUNNING towards you! I think I paid like $25 for it. Easy to use, too! I was pretty amazed at how well it worked for coyotes!

    The easiest calling is the coldest nights in late winter. Anything that sounds like food will bring them running.
