NEW AMMO
Last night I decided it was time for new bullets in my two main carry pistolas. The mod 642 S&W 15 oz .38 is getting Federal 158 gr +P lead HP semi wad cutters and the Glock mod 27 is switching from Gold Dots to Federal 180 gr HST HP. Both loads seem to be perfectly adequate if I do my part and provide proper guidance. New Bullets!! Yea!! You know if I lived in N.J. I would be a felon just because of my choice of ammo. Crazy, huh??

Its been a few years but one summer I tested every 9mm bullet I could get my hands on.
The Gold Dots were the winner, hands down.
Consistency was the key.
Some bullets, even hollow points did nothing but penetrate while some were poor perpetrators.
Some bullets opened to the size of a half-dollar then next time did not expand at all.
Some were obviously under powered.
Some bullets were extreme over-perpetrators on every shot. NOTE: Some "experts" are firm believers in deep penetration especially in the big bears but I disagree. My goal is sufficient penetration followed by expending the bullet's energy in the bear...or bad guy.
In my tests Gold Dots expanded moderately each and every time and penetrated to the same (acceptable) depth each and every time.
I did not write up a "thesis" on my finding but I did satisfy myself that my defense ammo will be Gold Dots in whichever gun is on me.
Every couple of years I go on a Gold Dot safari. They are never cheap.
I did not test other calibers but later I did shoot 357Sig Gold Dots (Glock 33) into the skull of a archery-killed bull moose. Moose skulls are notorious for being heavy-boned and bullet proof.
I fired one bullet into the front of the skull and another into the side then sawed it in half. Both bullets were found in the brain flattened and damaged but they still retained over half of their original weight.
They bloom into such beautiful little flowers.0 -

The first pic in your post is Federal HST ammo, not Speer Gold Dot.0 -

So often misunderstood and misinterpreted by many including NJ Law enforcement unfortunately...
It is perfectly legal to buy and sell and possess hollowpoint ammo in NJ - to target shoot or use for self defense - to handover - etc...
The issue is possessing hollowpoints or using them when committing a crime or participating in criminal activity - it's becomes a charge enhancement issue and can lead to addition charges and fines and a heavier sentencing if it comes into play in court at trial.
I have had to deal with clarifying this issue for to often especially during my gunshop days and as a range safety officer and instructor at the local range.
It's a Jersey thing - what are you gonna do.
