Debit Card Hacked
On the 30th I discovered a charge by my debit card # to my checking account of $17.35 to Netflix. I don't use Netflix! Then I went back and found a $10 charge to the Red Cross on Christmas day that I didn't do. I immediately called my Credit Union and had the card disabled, then went there to get a new card. All I can figure is that whoever did it was "just testing" before hitting me for a LOT more money. The CU rep said that if it wasn't over $50, they couldn't do much to retrieve my $37. I also xferred over $20K out of the checking acct and into a savings acct, leaving enough to take care of our expenses for this month.
Now I'm getting paranoid about it!

Regardless of what Dave Ramsey says I do not use debt cards. I have one that my bank requires me to have but I have never used it. The only time I remember having an issue was a shirt I ordered online that was around $80.00 and it never arrived. I called Amex and they credited my account immediately. I have a personal and a business card both of which I pay every month and give me rewards. I order a fair amount from Amazon and have one of their cards and I get a lot of discounts from that card. 0 -
I never use a debit card,....don't even have one. Credit cards only for me, and never a problem. 0 -
Join the crowd.. cheap lesson. I will not use a CC affiliated with a Bank. 0 -
Glad it wasn't worse!
I use a credit card for EVERYTHING why not I get points for every dollar I was going to spend anyway and I pay no interest because I pay off the card prior to any interest accrual.
After I accumulate a level of points i trade them for Restaurant gift cards or cash back, sometimes they have specials and you can get a gift card for 10 bucks more than the normal point fee.0 -
A Bank kept sending me cards for a free $300 if I opened an account. Ok I am close to being paid, hopefully. They have some good account security, maybe. I needed a code to set it up. I go in and get pointed to some office guy for help. He gets me a code and takes over my phone and helps me set it up. He then changed the user name and I caught him after later trying to sign in. Good thing they had an option to fix if username forgotten So I see his created name and its one letter off from the the paper I was using with him. I may go back with the proof and chat with him and a co worker or two.> 0 -
Credit card are fine. You can always challenge something. But debit card are a big mistake..... the money is gone in an instant and you are stuck. 0 -
You are lucky you just lost $37.
You could have lost it all with a debit card.
Debit cards offer almost no protection compared to a credit card.
I destroyed every debit card I had.0 -
I only us debit card to access my banks hole in wall and no other atm for my cash 0 -
OK :
I do have a 'debit card' : middle of last year my card was hacked : $55.00 : filed a complaint with the bank , had to sisn a paper that I Did Not make the charge , they gave me a new card & apx. 30 days later they refunded the money !
Funny thing : the charge was @ a local 'storage'place : I went in there (2X) and talked to the 'manager' , she claimed she did NOT know where (who) the funds went to ? But I could tell by the way she acted that she did know ??? WTH ???
Thanks !!!0 -
2 weeks before Christmas I bought gas at the local country "Gobble Stop No. 11". This is VA Tech country. Hahahahahaha.
Next day I had 3 CC charges I did not make. I called VISA - they were calling me at the same time because the charges were flagged (after the 2 test charges the third charge was international).
VISA said the card number could have been compromised anywhere from my wallet to their processing center but they highly suspected Gas Pump Skimming.
Card frozen, charges refunded, new card in the mail.
The kids at the Gobble Stop were uninterested. Maybe the guilty party(s)? So now I buy gas over by I-77 at the Kangaroo Hop. Hahahahahahahaha

Gave up debit cards years ago. I buy everything with credit cards from BOA and Chase, and get 1-3% back for doing so as I pay my balance every month. They have zero liability for scams/stolen card numbers etc. Convenient and free money! 0 -

Not true, our debit cards carry the same protection as a CC. I got hacked about three weeks ago to the tune of $305 and change. The money was back in my account within a week.0 -

A debit card is dangerous. I have one but I never use it, it doubles as an ATM card.0 -

BINGO!! We have a winner.
One can dispute a charge on a credit card and even if fraud involved, you limit of liability is $50 max!
With a debit card, it's like cash and when gone, it's gone forever with no hope of recovery.
I have never had nor will I ever have a debit card. :!:
I also do not use an ATM .... it's just stupid to pay a bank to get your own money to use.

An ATM card that is also a debit card is a scam
by the bank. When my bank sent me one without my requesting it, I complained, & they sent me a plain ATM card.

You fellas must bank at some hokie places. At our credit union, debit cards have the same protection as credit cards. I have been hacked twice, and my wife once. Every time their fraud unit has called within five minutes of suspicious activity. Every time they replace the stolen funds. Oh, and they don't charge me a fee to use my card at the atm 0 -
I have had credit card numbers stolen a few times, never my debit card. 0 -

That's BS. You need to change banks.0 -
Ask any 'expert' that deals with identity theft, and bogus charges on cards,....they will undoubtedly stick with credit cards being safer, and easier to deal with concerning security breaches. In GENERAL this is a proven fact.Horse Plains Drifter wrote:You fellas must bank at some hokie places. At our credit union, debit cards have the same protection as credit cards. Just because you haven't had any issues with your credit union, doesn't make debit cards safer overall. It simply reinforces that they are safe for you to this point in your life.
I know a number of folks that have had to jump through hoops to get their money back from debit card breaches, and none of them belong to 'hokie' banks, or credit unions. All of them HAVE gotten their money back, it just took varying amounts of time, (up to 6 months in one case) and hassle to accomplish. I know no one that has had this level of hassle with a false charge on a major credit card.
The facts are,...you stand a greater chance of having major hassles with debit cards, and you have less protection when dealing with shady merchants, when not using a credit card. I don't care what somebody uses,....has no effect on my life.0
