Looking forward to a good, long day of bowl games!!!
Starting at 10AM PT with the Bama-Michigan and Auburn-Minnesota game at the same time (what a lashed up schedule!!!) on two different screens, followed by Oregon-Wisconsin, and ending with Georgia-Baylor. Got a large pot of black eye and purple hull peas with ham hocks for posterity throughout the new year, plus a large pot of collard greens and turkey necks, and cornbread all ready to go!!! Are you ready for some football?!!!!

Happy New Year! Got to watch the games all afternoon at work. Everyone in our Bowl Pool lost the Auburn game! Got distracted fixing dinner and forgot to fix the cornbread. Oh well, just me and MrsFun and she is not a huge cornbread fan.. (her moms was terrible) but I did 4 huge bunches of collards, hope to put up 6 to 8 quarts. If the store has any left at that price I may do another batch. Just so I have some throughout the summer!0 -

As a big OU fan, and to a lesser extent all big 12 teams, I thought they'd do better overall. I expected for OU to lose but not by that much though. I think mentally the kids getting suspended hit more moral-wise than actual on field (at least until Hiles got ejected) I didn't think they really deserved to be in the playoffs this year. After about week 4 or 5, they seemed to do just enough to win. The defense is better than last few years, but they have been hit or miss. That said, I expected some of the other teams to do well. I thought ISU may not win, but be right in it. Baylor, I knew would be tough game, but thought they could pull it off. If Bill Snyder was still at KSU, then I would have fully expected them to win. Their signature win was definitely the win over OU. I thought OSU would win their game. At least they made an honorable showing against a former in-conference team.
All in all, the big 12 seemed more competitive this year, but the last part of the season they just kind of fell flat (all of them). Maybe there was just more parity in the conference this year making it seem the overall level was up.
For the first time that I can think of since the playoff era started, I think they got 3 of the playoff teams right (top 3). Who should have been in 4? I don't know. After those 3, there are several that are all at about the same level. Georgia or Oregon probably would have topped the list for the 4th spot. At least I am glad Alabama wasn't an option this year.0 -
Was making a return drive from NWA so I listened to the 'Bama game on SiriusXM. Was so pooped I couldn't hang for the Georgia game. Back watching today's games in the comfort of my own home in my jammies. Looking forward to this weekends' NFL playoff games. Got to see the Chiefs clinch the bye at Arrowhead! 0 -

Minnesota looked good in their win over Auburn, Captain.
Talk about some bad cornbread...that's all they have in the Seattle area...awful stuff. It does not taste anything like cornbread. They have the same problem with Dairy Queen hamburgers up here...no comparison whatsoever to those down south.

Not a good year for the BIG-12 at all. One thing for sure, though, is that they consistently play quality competition on the whole during bowl season. For example, ISU (7-5?) played Notre Dame (10-2), and if there was a competitive conference made up of Independents, then ND would have likely been the conference champion with Navy coming in at No. 2 and a 10-2 record matched against two teams that at their best might have been the No. 3 team or more likely a No. 5 or 6 team in ISU and K-State, since there was a four way tie for 3rd place in the B-12.
I thought like you in that they looked more competitive, however, that panned out to be conference wide, only, which makes sense now that the results are in. Texas had nine returning starters this year...not good at all, especially when they were riddled with injuries from start to finish. Next year they have 15 returning as it stands now. Maybe, this year was a rebuilding season. I hope so.
Oklahoma's problem in bowl games have been slow starts, that's all. Baylor had the opportunity to walk all over Georgia and they should and could have bigtime but they didn't. The Bears D was all over the Dawgs early on, but could not get it going until late in the game and then sporadically at best. The Baylor coach was the one at fault here. Seems like he cannot get his team prepared for big games, and I think he chokes up and flubs things during game time and a few days before. He definitely blew the play calling against Georgia, and he took his team to see some kind of "activist" movie the night before their conference championship game with Oklahoma...it was I'm thinking! That is the kind of political trash we have in college sports today!0 -
Too many good college players are sitting out bowl games not wanting to be injured (big-big signing money involved here) due to possible NFL draft/signings thus making bowl games almost meaningless for deserving schools, so it's really hard to say who's top.........something has to give with this scenario 0 -

Though I understand the logic, I really dislike that. I think that shouldn't have existed. I guarantee nearly 100% of those that sat out would have played if going for a national championship. I get the logic, but the players have played as a team their entire college career. Then their last chance to play with the people that helped you succeed, they suddenly flip a switch and said nope, I am all about me now. Personally, unless injured I think they should play the full season, however long that is, until the season is done.
I feel even more this way about coaches. Contracts between the coaches and the schools should be such that even if they take another coaching job, they should run out the season. The contracts should be written this way. I mean, what do the coaches gain by missing the last game or two? They don't have the same concerns the players leaving for the NFL do.
For me, I was a 3 time loser. My junior year, which I knew would be my last there) in football played for state championships in 2a. Then, twice in basketball regional championships at a different school when we moved. Of course it is not the same, but as much as wanting a to crown the accomplishment of winning it, I kept wanting another game with the team. This was especially true with the football championship. I grew up in that town and I also knew the other school didn't have football. So, I wanted more... Incidentally, one of my team mates from that school brought the winning tradition back and they won a national record of 7 consecutive state championships.0 -
