Gutter guards

Any out there that really work? I've heard the ones that acturally keep the leaves out also don't allow the water to drain into the gutter ;)

    Yup, that is what everyone I know that used the various types has said.

    I've never seen a system that didn't get clogged up and require cleaning out, and what's more, it's a bigger pain to do with all the nonsense in the way.

    I bought the Beldon Leaf Guard system about 10 years ago, & it works well. All the parts are twice the size of standard gutters & down spouts, & they handle a lot more water volume. They never got stopped by occasional leaves & twigs. Just be sure that the downspouts are part of a drainage system that moves the water away from your house. Not cheap, but less expensive than the copays & deductibles for an orthopedic surgeon.

    I had the gutter helmet system for about 12 years. Worked like a charm and never had to clean it out during that time. We have a ton of leaves and pine needles and it handled them all like a charm. A couple of years ago we had hail and wind damage to the roof and had to have the roof and gutters replaced. The roofer hated gutter helmet and said we would be much happier with his system that is basically a perforated panel on top of the gutters. Like a damn fool I believed him. Unfortunately we used the leftover insurance money on some other much needed exterior repairs. Now when I am on a ladder cleaning off those perforated guards I totally regret not insisting on Gutter Helmet when the work was done. Maybe one day I'll stop being so cheap and spring for the Gutter helmet system again, but they sure are expensive. You get what you pay for and the cheap system doesn't work very well. The Gutter Helmet costs an arm and a leg and worked great. Bob

    I put the Home Depot guards on three years ago and have had minor issues.

    I went with oversize gutters & downspouts & then used the cheep gutter guards. They are flat aluminum with an abundance of small holes. They actually cost more to install then purchase. The best part is that they work for a fraction of the cost of the super-duper guards. At the bottom of the large valleys, the installer added a 1" high extension to the face of the gutter. Since then, I have cut out a small section of the guard at the bottom of each valley to control overflow in downpours. I have yet to have to clean them and again, they were very "cost effective" & they work !

    I see them all up close and maybe 1/10 work at all. A lot because of installation miscalculations lol

    I put on the Home Depot mesh guards and have had 0 problems.  I have no trees that can put leaves on the roof, but the next door neighbor has a giant mulberry.  the guards keep the leaves out and they blow on.  I do live in the desert, so there are no mats of wet leaves lying anywhere.
