continue Nunns car dealers rant
went to Mobile yesterday to look at used vehicles, thinking it is time to upgrade. visited three dealers who all had a vehicle i could be interested in. ask each of them about their "fees". was told by each $749.00, that is crazy to me. 749 for you to do the paperwork just so you can sell me a car. yes sir they said and we dont waive that. i thought it peculiar they all charged the same amount and said so but did not get an answer. needless to say i came home empty handed, seems i need to think about this a bit more.

Buy off of an individual, or a bank on a repo. Even new cars have warranty. Lots of folks get them and do not pay. Warranty still exists. 0 -
Wow. That's darn good wages for 20 minutes work to write down a few numbers on some forms and to go check them on the car. I'd be shopping used elsewhere. Hard to buy a new car without a dealer. 0 -
Yeah, at one dealership, we asked, "What is the out-the-door price on this car?"
Salesman said, "Advertised internet price, plus tax, plus $899."
"What's the $899 for."
"It's for warranty on incidentals, tires, paint dings, even window tint. If the tint ever bubbles up or cracks, we fix it."
I rolled down the window a little, and showed him that the window was factory tinted and had no film on it. I pointed this out, "This tint will never bubble, so you would be doing no work on that. And we are not going to drive an hour over here for you to make sure we have the correct amount of nitrogen in the tires."
We went elsewhere.0 -
When I bought my used Highlander, I went in to the dealership with a guaranteed loan approval letter. I showed them that and said, I'll take the car for that amount bottom line. They agreed and started to add fees, taxes and more to that number. I said, "Stop. You misunderstood. That's my bottom line - and yours. You can charge me any fees and taxes you like, but they come out of that number. It's up to you to back-figure from there."
They stared at me open-mouthed for a full minute. Then the owner came over and heard my offer. HE stared. Then he said, "You sure know how to bargain." And handed me the keys.0 -
I have more honest crooks in my area; they list the bogus charges on the sticker as "additional dealer mark up".
I'm guessing that you don't have a Carmax in your area; they don't play games like that.

The dealer doesn't always win.

i agree with you guys. when im ready to buy i too set an out the door price and make sure they understand this is going to be the number on the check i write period. i was talking about how the fee was exactly the same at every dealer, i dont think that was coincidental. 0 -
Around here the "doc fees" are anywhere from $500 to $699, no matter the price on the vehicle. I just tell the salesman I don't pay doc fees on a cash deal no trade. If you want to sign the title I will take it to the DMV myself and do the transfer. They balk. I walk if they won't take the fee off the price. It is just added dealer profit nothing more. Modern Subaru in Boone NC took their $699 off the already negotiated vehicle price for me.
I turned down a purchase of a new Honda Pioneer 500 over a $150 "doc fee". Cash in hand, price otherwise was $7899 plus tax. Walked out and never went back.0 -
With the internet many dealers are having to list vehicles at a low price and add the "dealer fee" or infrastructure fee" Etc. to make sure they have some money in it. I don't fault any of them for making a profit and running a business as long as I'm confident I can't buy the same-ish vehicle somewhere else for much less. 0 -
Same way I have always done it. Give a figure I will write a check for, and tell them I don't give a crap how they make it all add up, as long as it's not one penny more than my figure.Rocky Raab wrote:When I bought my used Highlander, I went in to the dealership with a guaranteed loan approval letter. I also add that if a finance guy wastes my time trying to get me to make payments instead of paying cash, I am gone with my check.0 -
Before Christmas went shopping for a new truck, not brand new, but 2015-2016 or so.
My wife no longer liked her KIA, a 2013, so had that as a trade, $3000.00 cash in my pocket and the bank lined up for what I needed.
First dealer low balled my trade and then said that $3000.00 wasn't much of a down payment.
Second dealer said that they don't deal. Sticker is sticker price, unless you pay in cash.
Third dealer shot me a very good price on the KIA didn't blink at my $3000.00 or my bank letter. i threw him a number he through one back.
I said write down the final price, he did. An hour later I was driving a new set of wheels.
Just how hard is it to be fair.
When i told the dealer iIlove to dance, but only with my wife, I came to buy a truck, not BS. He told me that was fair 'enuff.
I'd buy from him again.0
