My Uncle was a Corpsman attached to the Marines. He made the landings on Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian. He lived by the ocean and never once went to the beach. He never even mentioned what he did until the day I graduated Marine Corps OCS.

I have looked forward to reading this every year. The message is just as meaningful as it was the first time I read it years ago. It would not seem like the holiday without it. Thanks for posting it and reminding us of the true reason for Memorial day. Bob

...My Dad passed away in 1992...he served in the European Theater...France Germany etc...he was in the Battle Of The Buldge (Ardennes), his feet were frozen there, Docs wanted to amputate and he said "no", he had trouble with his feet the rest of his life...but he walked on his own.

...I have a Rosary that a dieing German Sniper gave to him...my Dad was a sniper, and this German sniper and Dad were in a "dual", more or less... Dad "won" the dual......when Dad went up to where he saw this guy fall from a tree, he was still alive and spoke perfect english, seems he had gone to college here in the US before the war...

...The German gave Dad a rosary, and ask Dad to take a paper from his pocket...the paper had the names and address of his family, he asked Dad to contact them after the war, if he could... and please let them know what happened, but leave out the details, then he died...The German told my Dad that IF he ever started feeling bad over killing him, to take out the rosary and KNOW that he, would have shot Dad if he could have...the rosary is in my gun room with some things my uncle gave me from Iwo Jima...war IS hell...

I don't know how many times I've read that, Rocky, but it makes me tear up every time.
