Older Ithaca Model 37 LW 20 Ga. Pump Question
Good afternoon. My question concerns an older Ithaca Model 37 LW 20 gauge I have. It currently has a standard issue Imp. Cyl. smooth barrel and I wanted to know if:
1) Can the existing barrel be retro fitted with a vent rib & invector screw-in choke system? OR -
2) Is it possible to purchase a new barrel for it with the vent rib and screw-in choke features and
will it fit?

Depends, if you have the old model 855,000 says factory fitting is required. As far as putting rib and chokes on it, ask a good gunsmith if you have one in your area. If you want to buy a rib 20 barrel with chokes look to pay 270 up. Someone will advise a better answer as we have some Ithaca experts on here.

By the time you have a rib installed, choke tube threading done and the barrel reblued it might be more cost effective to get a new barrel even if you have to have them fit it properly. i dont think the threads on those actually have a pitch and fitting a barrel has to do with headspace. choke tubes, colonial chokes in spanish fort, al are really good people to deal with.

I have had some work done by Colonial that 'varian' mentions. Very pleased with their work. Since it will have been off your shotgun - there is no doubt about it will fit when returned. Best Regards - AQH

Ithaca did not make a 37 with the LW (Light Weight?) designation. Do you have the standard "Featherlight" or the later "UltraLite"? The Ultralite would have ULT following the serial # and would have been made in the era of interchangeable barrels. The Featherlight, as has been said, would have to be post #855000 to have interchangeable barrels. I know of no firm that sells Ithaca barrels, and, at this late date with multiple Ithaca reorganizations, you would probably have to have one built. The cost for that might approach the price of a new gun!

After reading the barrel info on the Ithaca site, I see getting a new barrel and having it fitted can get a bit pricey. If the gun is below 855,000 they want $750 including the new barrel. Colonial charges $125 for choke threading plus the cost of tubes and Simmons Gun Specialties would charge you around $450 for rib installation and reblue. Either route seems pretty high and personally I would put the money toward a new shotgun instead. Bob

This is the most recent price list I've seen for Mike Orlen.
Don't know if he does ribs, but he does outstanding work on choke installations.
