Yikes! I can make a lot of trips to the ice cream shop for that price.

BassPro/Cabelas have one for $100 that you have the option of cranking or turning on the motor. With my old shoulder that would be the one I get. Bob

My wife has four of them, including one with an electric motor. My friend has on that he turns with an old hit-miss engine.

I remember cranking as a kid.

I have an electric White Mountain that is the best there is.

...as a kid, my job was to sit on it while my uncles cranked it...the top was covered with a blanket to keep it cold, I guess...ice and rock salt was added now and then, and a hole near the top was cleared of ice to make sure the salty melt water didnt get into where the ice cream mixture was,..Ive had an electric ice cream maker for years that works great...you can sure make some rich ice cream substituting Eagle Brand or Pet milk for regular milk...its just easier to go and pick up some Blue Bell....good but not as good as homemade...

I saw a post about mason jar ice cream. I tried it twice and its not bad. Put heavy cream in cold container, maybe add fruit in tiny pieces, maybe vanilla. Shake like crazy, {no putting jar in tumbler]. Gotta go 10 min. Put in freezer and reshake a couple times for a bit. It took over night. Takes much longer to eat and different texture because much harder. More shaking gave much less crystals

The shaking is for the formation of overrun. Overrun is the amount of air in the ice cream and keeps the ice cream from freezing into a solid block like ice. Premium ice cream has high fat and a modest amount of air. Cheap ice cream has little fat and a lot more air. Soft serve ice cream might be 30% air. That way they make more with less/cheaper dairy product and still have it soft enough to eat. Bob

Yeah, I remember that. I wasn't strong enough to crank so I sat on the churn and added salt.

A brand new hand crank ice cream churn was less than five bucks.

Oh, and it was the best ice cream in the world.
