HELENA, Mont. — Montana is ending its participation in the federal unemployment program that gives people extra weekly unemployment benefit payments as the state struggles with a worker shortage, Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte announced Tuesday.
Beginning June 27, unemployed workers in the state will no longer receive $300 in weekly extra benefits funded by the federal government through Sept. 6.
The state will launch a new program to give bonuses to unemployed workers who return to work.
“Montana is open for business again, but I hear from too many employers throughout our state who can’t find workers. Nearly every sector in our economy faces a labor shortage,” Gianforte said in a statement.
He said that the extra federal unemployment benefits are “doing more harm than good,” echoing comments by some that the extra payments have served as an incentive for people to stay home, collect the money and not seek work.
U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh was disappointed by Gianforte’s decision, according to a statement by U.S. Labor Department spokesperson Michael Trupo.

That's a common complaint heard from employers everywhere. A year ago the additional unemployment funds were a good idea. Now, everyone wants to open up the economy. That takes workers. Paying people bonuses to not work no longer makes sense.

SC just cut off all unemployment IF the folks do not turn in where they are looking for jobs. IF they do not turn it in .. then they have to repay all monies that was paid out.

In Illinois I have talked to many owners/ managers of places. They agree the slobs are staying home and not working. This state will reward that type of behavior until the well runs dry. It is past insane for this to be happening. Although Illinois will NEVER do anything like that I hope more states do.

I have never seen as many "Help Wanted" signs around town as I do now. The same for the radio ads. It seems everybody is looking for workers - and many are advertising right there on the sign how much they are willing to pay.

Same here in Bozeman. Fast food is starting at $16 hrly, landscape helpers $25,,,,,This is a college town, but todays students do not need/want to work. There just is no work force left.

Local food chain just finished putting the finishing touches on their new building. Not able to open due to lack of help.
I heard that they had 50 applicants and 48 of the 50 popped positive for drugs.
Another established chain is offering 17.00 per hour with a 400.00 sign up bonus, no takers.

"Back in the day" you might have to work at more than one job in order to pay for the things you want/need.
Now you are not supposed to work at all, if your one and only job will not pay for the things you want/need? Did they pass a law that says you can only have one job?
Yes, I intentionally said "want/need" because it appears to me that most of the things people buy are the things they want as opposed to the things they need.
They buy big screen TVs and lease fancy cars, but complain because they can't get food stamps to pay for their food - or their rent is too high.
I know you will not have time to watch your big screen TV, if you have to work more than one job. The good news is that you also probably have cable and a DVR so you could just watch your TV show later . . . when you get home from the bar.
