Always amazes me that tree roots can work their way into the tiniest of crevices and split giant rocks!

  Part of that comes from water that gets into the tiny crevices and freezes. It's immensely strong as it freezes and expands.

  Yes and I've seen people build houses and leave or let big trees grow or continue growing right next to the foundation and even the concrete slab type homes.

  Adds new meaning to the term tree huggers.

  Turgor pressure. Water plus cellulose = split rock. A number of bonsai and rock figs are grown that way in pots.
