Another great book about the gulag system and amazing insights into the Soviet mindset is called Man is Wolf to Man.
I highly recommend it. Someone on GB told me about it years ago.

His book, "One Day in the life of Ivan Denisovich" gives a good picture of what it meant to be in a Soviet prison work camp.
