Your M48 is a large ring Mauser, with a large ring barrel shank, and chambered for 8mm Mauser. You are all over the place with bad information, and if you got it from that gunsmith, you need to find another one. All those Spanish Mausers are small ring, and were chambered in 7mm, and some later converted to 7.62 CETME. The Argentine Mausers were chambered in 7.65.

I think I can guess, you want a military profile barrel in 7.62 NATO? Look for a Spanish FR-8 barrel, an Israeli 98 Mauser barrel, or Lothar Walther can make you a new one. Whatever you find, it will most likely need machine work on the threads to set the headspacing. Then the sights will have to be clocked, and soldered. This isn't a plug and play job.

The above info is correct. All I can add is: it's most likely going to come out more cost effective to just buy another rifle.

Or, maybe, an Ishapore Enfield 2A1?

just to 'note'...........the m-48 is 'safety breeched', so any 'off the shelf' barrel you find will need some machine work.

Will need a cut in the barrel for the Extractor,
