If they want to be more competitive stop losing packages and stop the frequent flier miles some packages get going the long way around.

Good lord- I wish my competition would adopt a similar business strategy.

I have several thoughts on this. Hire the top young hotshot exec away from UPS so he can try and remake USPS into the image of UPS. Give this exec the power to do as he pleases with the government unions. In theory this make a quick turn around very possible.

The pink elephant sitting in the corner that makes this all a moot point is so obvious. There is {at least in my opinion} no way for the USPS to ever turn a profit. The unfunded liabilities problem in and of itself is massive enough to guarantee failure!!

UPS is union.I am pretty much pro union for private companies.I am anti union for any government employees. If you are paid with tax payer money,no unions because its a bottomless money pit for abuse.

I don't know if it would make them more profitable but my longtime wish is that the USPS would handle the same stuff the other carriers do. Ammunition, for one. Many mailmen are gun aficionados.

Ain’t gonna happen. Private enterprise (Amazon, FedEx, UPS) will continue to eat their lunch. Not saying it’s right or best, just that it is.

"WAY too many non-required employees but all are kept and paid by guess who"

I'm not a good guesser, who would you guess?

"There is {at least in my opinion} no way for the USPS to ever turn a profit. "

You're correct but not for the reason you expect. USPS IS REQUIRED BY LAW TO NOT MAKE A PORFIT.

" remake USPS into the image of UPS."

This would not be possible since USPS is expected to travel to every address every scheduled delivery day whereas UPS only goes to addresses for which they have a delivery. If UPS drove to every delivery address every day, their profitability would be non-existent.

The pre-funded mandate needs to be fixed before anything else.

My mail to the same city i live in ( The Capital of Kansas ) is sent to another city about 60 miles away to be sorted and sent back to be sorted again and then delivered just down the road from me. Makes perfect since !

UPS, FedEx, and Amazon do not burn up gas, and pay an employee to arrive at your house or business every day, dropping off a stack of advertising materials that you did not order, do not want, that go directly to the recycle bin. USPS needs to get back to being a mail-carrier, not an advertising delivery service.

"USPS needs to get back to being a mail-carrier, not an advertising delivery service."

Sort of true BUT that "filler material" helps pay for the everyday trip to each address. Over the years, "bulk mail" has probably been discounted too much and should have been carrying more of the load so to speak.

"need to start by booting the PMG."

"PMG's" don't necessarily know anything about mail delivery service. Some have prior business credentials and some are simply political cronies. Several have done their best to completely destroy USPS from the inside with totally unrealistic ideas and money maker schemes that failed.

Three generations of my family worked at the Post Office for 92 consecutive years with many years of overlap for a total of 112 years of service and my current Rural Mail Carrier is a guy who I mentored when he was hired. I could literally write a book about the "then and now".

The post office must deliver your letter anywhere in the country for 55 cents. If they are going to be more like UPS, that same letter will cost you at least $8.80 and they won't have to deliver to all addresses.

Unfortunately, it will probably get worse before it gets better. With the way the current political wind is blowing there will be even more emphasis by the union to give preferential hiring based on things like race or gender regardless of qualifications. I have seen postal employees flaunt rules, fail drug tests, and not show up for work and still keep their jobs. This puts a burden on the good employees and creates a negative work environment. I wish that a president would step up and do what Reagan did to the air traffic controllers. Give the postal unions an ultimatum and if they don't comply start over without them. Might cause a month of problems but it would be better in the long run. Bob

    They lost billions last year.

They are getting ALL new electric operated vec's so as to save on gas and fossil fuels.

Do the figures on that one.

They think maybe that ALL new vec's will get them out of the red area. (yea sure)

Just another cluster ran by the Gov't.

USPS was never intended to be a profit making organization. From the very inception it was seen as a service, to insure the delivery of mail, which was essentially done in no other way in the early days of the country. At some point in the last century some genius decided it rally should be a profit making entity, and so it was converted to a semi-government agency run by a businessman. It has yet to make a profit, and really other than Christmas cards, who mails any thing any more except Amazon and junk mail companies?

I still pay my bills via the US mail. I write checks and everything! The only thing I have done different in the last few years is that all of my bills are clustered into a credit card. Therefore I only have one bill a month! 🙂

Bust all Government unions and the private unions can KMA. They are useless relics of a bygone era where Government regulations now make them a has-been of the past. They are funnels to the (D) party, nothing more.

Well according to the US Postal Service, they lost 9.2 BILLION dollars last year. Do you suppose that is shareholder or tax payer money?

The only money USPS receives from the "budget" is payment for "franked mail" and in fact this often doesn't cover the true cost of first class postage.

I have 4 suggestions for them.

    1. Get people behind the counter that will work, and get more self serve/checkout machines out front.
    2. Get rid of the EO hires and be able to fire employees who are sub par.
    3. Stop worrying about "Green" crap and deliver the mail no matter what.
    4. Get rid of Sat mail delivery, its not really needed and on Sat and Sunday use that time to deliver for one of the online shopping stores.

Hey, stop picking on my buddy, Paul Pelosi (Nancy's husband). He made millions as a "venture capitalist", buying run down commercial buildings & renting them to the USPS at outrageous rates.
