Crazy gun prices but there are deals
I think everyone is going gaga over fighting guns but over looking stuff that would work in a pinch.
I was looking at Remington 742's they are going for good prices. If I wanted a gun to defend the house, that would do in a pinch. A 742 in 30-06 would work wonders on some antifa creep. Load it with 150gr soft point and put them COM nobody is getting up from that and its not a "Scary" black gun.
Or how about a Marlin 30-30?
Even a Remington 760 in 30-06?
All these are viable HD guns.
Yes you may have some over penetration but in the end the bad guy would be toes up. Against a car or if the guy was behind cover a 30-06 is the bomb for rooting out dirt bags.

Last I saw Rems and Marlins are both through the roof right now, probably due to them being closed since last August.

Yep, everything through the roof.
Stimulus checks will drive price up more for awhile I suspect.
Not a fan of a 742:
But the NEW 742 06 that I owned was only a one shot gun, then jam. Remington gunsmiths were constantly working on the gun and they never did get it as a reliable Automatic.
I would not want a 742 30:06 for home defense unless I could use it as a club, but on that subject a club would be more user friendly because the gun did not even carry easy through the woods.

My Son recently asked me "If you were going to own just one rifle for all around use and HD, what would it be?"
After giving it some thought, I replied - "Probably a Win 94 or Marlin 336 in .30 .30. The Original Assault rifle." You can throw a lot of lead downrange with one of those."
After hooking him up with a new Win 1300 Riot pump just before the Election. (If you can call it that?) He and his girlfriend have the bug, realize if they are going to arm themselves they better get on it. They are shopping for handguns and a rifle.
My Son's girlfriends father is a long time SWAT guy down in Miami, she grew up shooting.
I agree with Sam06. Lot's and lot's of firearms that are overlooked for HD, due to not looking tacticool. Gotta think outside the box.

KenK/84Bravo "Probably a Win 94 or Marlin 336 in .30 .30. The Original Assault rifle." I've got both of those, except the 94 is in 44Mag to match up with my SBHs... Had one in 30-30 years ago, but lost it to a pawn shop in my wayward youth... Love me some lever guys.

I would prefer the marlin over the 94 but lets be honest, for inside the house, home defense, at close range, I doubt you could tell the difference!! Without looking up the ballistics for a 30-30 at close range I'm 100% sure it would be better than an AR.

I'd agree with that dreher.
If I absolutely had to choose which one to get shot with, hands down it would be .223/5.56.
.30 .30 is no Joke. Pretty much put a Dude down, big time.
Shooting my 1952 Win. 94, .30 .30 off the back deck. "BOOM!"
My AR's, "pow."

That isn't even mentioning comparing bullet diameter and bullet weight!

All about Ft. lbs. of Energy. The .30 .30 stomps all over the .223/5.56, inside 150-200 yards.
If we're talking using it beyond 150-200 yards, I'd take the .223/5.56 all day long.
It's all relative.

may be a bit more cost upfront, but the 357 lever action is comparable ballistically to the 30-30 but holds 10-12 rounds, lot more than the 30-30....
3 -
Bro. Seriously, you think a .357 will shoot as far as a .30 .30?
What is that W VA logic?
Oh Snap, that's an Oxymoron.
(More like the .357 is comparable to a .30 Carbine, ballistically.)

With just the sights that come on my lever gun, anything out at 100 yards plus is reasonably safe. I would never hunt with a 30-30 and iron sights. I think it is my responsibility as a hunter to provide a lights out kill. Scoped is a whole different ball game.
But since we are talking a home defense scenario those iron sights are wonderful at 50 feet!!😁

That's the difference between Win 94's and the Marlin 336 guy's.
Guy's who want scopes, choose the 336. Guys that choose the 94, want an iron sight Wood's gun.
My brother had a Marlin 336, I've got a 1952 Win 94.

I'd also be entirely comfortable with a M1 Carbine for HD. Awesome little Carbines. Super handy.
My Son loves mine, but then you get in to that pesky little Bayonet lug, making it an Evil Assault rifle. (Because we all know based on recent shootings, bayonets are really, really bad news.)
My Son is in CO.

Look at Savage 340's. Yep they are bolt guns but in 30 WCF they will kick butt.
I have one with a receiver sight and it is a very good rifle.
I think a Remington 760 pump rifle in 30-06 would be a great all around gun, home defense, hunting whatever you need.
Savage made a rifle called the 170 in 30-30 another pump gun, it would be a great HD gun.
