The 1925 serum run to Nome, also known as the Great Race of Mercy and The Serum Run, was a transport of diphtheria antitoxin by dog sled relay across the U.S. territory of Alaska by 20 mushers and about 150 sled dogs across 674 miles (1,085 km) in 5 ½ days, saving the small town of Nome and the surrounding communities from a developing epidemic.6 -

People think it was Balto that lead that famous dog team but it wasn't. Balto just finished the end of the race. Togo was the dog that lead the team that carried the vaccine. The movie named Togo is on the Disney channel and is very good. I found it to be a tear jerker.
I read the part in the movie where Togo let the team across the ice really happened. I recommend you watch the movie. Or better yet maybe there is a book.
