Just imagine the looks when the architect enrolled those blueprints.

The week I graduated from high school I got a summer job as a brick mason's helper. We were building an apartment complex in Atlanta. We had one helper for every 3 masons.

Good God did we have to work hard. Sometimes we had to throw the bricks up, maybe 15 feet high. Another helper caught the bricks and stacked them on the scaffold. We lugged the mud around in 5 gallon buckets. Mud is a lot heavier than water. There is little shade on a masonry job, what a day of work in the 96 degree Georgia heat.

I did that for three months. I was in very good shape when September rolled around. It is about as hard as summer football practice but you have to do it 10 hours a day.

Those 5gal buckets can get heavy after an hour or two in the Tampa,FL sun ! I was 19.

"Need mud now!" I heard that a lot.

Brick throwing is an art. We would be three scaffolds high, you had to throw the bricks about 15 feet high. Lots and lots of bricks. The masons taught us, you get a 1x4 about 18 inches long. Hold that in your right hand. Place the brick on top of it, hold the brick down with your thumbs. Move the 1x4 down near the ground, then swing it up and when it is before your face release the brick.

This works exactly like an atlatl gives increased force to spear throwing. Also it was a lot easier on your hands. Your partner was up on the scaffold 15 feet high, the properly thrown brick would stop in midair right where he was stacking.

You could throw about 8 bricks per minute doing this technique. On a good day I would throw 500 bricks, fifteen feet high. Plus hauled lots and lots of buckets of mud.

The masons were older redneck guys they made a sport of giving the helpers a hard time. "There's rocks in my mud! Bring me some clean mud damn it!"

One day I decided to goof on the masons. Payback. I brought a little bottle of English Leather and mixed it into one mason's mud on the mortar board. He went to chop up the mud and he yelled out "I got perfume in my mud."

Later that day I slipped a live .303 cartridge into another mason's mud on the mortar board. He went to chop it up and he soon yelled out "Help I got a bullet in my mud!" The masons knew we helpers were goofing on them they thought it was hilarious.

One difference between a brick mason and a plumber is the mason has a tan line over his butt crack! ๐Ÿ˜

do you have any crackers to go with this soup ? ( if the mud was a bit too wet ๐Ÿ˜ )

not a fun job but I met people who liked it . as a young fellow I preferred to run a 90 pound jack hammer all day over hod carrier .

We don't have time for any breaks , you can take a break when the sun goes down.
