New Puter
Picked up a cheapo HP laptop with windows 10. The old toshiba with windows 7 was about wore out..doing goofy stuff and slow as molasses. Wife ordered new one and when we picked it up... my comment... don't leave that thing on my truck seat because it blends right in... Camo Laptop.

You now have a risk-free opportunity to convert the old one to Linux. My bet is that if you changed it to Linux Mint, the old one would work like new again. It would also be more secure, contain all the free software you're likely to need with no bloatware, and best of all, you'd no longer be under the full-time control of MS.

I have been considering that change. Just don’t enough yet about Linux.
What do you use for programs like Word and Excel?

SW0320 I believe the Linux Mint distribution contains open source version of all your common programs like Word and Excel and many others, the only drawback to using Linux is often if you do have an issue it takes your leg work to find the fix... not a big deal with today's Internet search capabilities, I taught Linux Admin classes for about 5 years late 90s early 2000s and loaded many different version over the years, but I still use MS on my HPs since I need to connect periodically to sites that require it. Nothing wrong with Linux imho.

I wrote a short article on how to try Linux from a thumb drive- and then install it when you see how nice it is. Shoot me a PM with your email and I'll attach it.
Most Linux versions contain LibreOffice, which does everything that MS Office does and is free.

I'm a cheap SOB and I have the Microsoft Office suite of programs, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, you name it. All bloatware and I hate it all. Microsoft just pisses me off.
I also have LibreOffice and it is fantastic stuff. It does everything you'll ever want to do with Word or Excel or the others, but it might be just a touch clunky in places, or the commands to do something esoteric might be hard to find in the menus. But they're there. And they're NOT Microsoft, so double thumbs up from me.
I live at the DOS prompt on my Windows boxes, and my job is all done on UNIX boxes. Years ago my boss told me "some day you'll like UNIX better than Windows". Back then, I was young and stupid and I scoffed at him. Today I couldn't agree more.

I am actually running two laptops.. the old windows 7 toshiba won't open up a lot of programs anymore especially for background checks.. I have an old acer a tenant left..that was unlocked and I use it for the checks on tenants. Real pain to have to go from one puter to the other. This new one is portable so I can take it with me after they fill out the application. If I have any word documents... security deposit letters or such I have a retired secretary now that does all of that.

Before you shoot it, select, do at least try Linux. You have nothing to lose and you will probably be amazed at what you gain. Those bog downs aren't the hardware, it's your Windows.

New one is up and going. Easy Pesy to save documents to a hard drive
