Adios Pop Update
My dad died last night. He was 89 and has had dementia for the last 4 years. He was in a Old folks home in the memory care ward and died in his sleep.
This may sound callous but he is in a better place now and I am relieved he died in his sleep and out of pain. He still knew who I was but not much else. It has been really sad seeing him decline over the last few months. The bad thing is I was leaving today to go see him. I sure would have liked to see him one last time, tell him I love him and give him a hug.
Dad was a Navy Corpsman and was assigned to the 1st Marine Regiment in the Korean war. He was with them all the way through to the end. After the war he was assigned to a hospital in TX and went to NBC school. He graduated top of his class and was awarded the honor to go see an Atom Bomb detonate. He had a relapse of malaria and didn't get to see the bomb explode but some of his buddies did. They all died in the mid 1960's.
He was good man and I loved him but I hated to see what dementia had done to him.

sorry to hear Sam, went throught he same with my mom few years back, if you are a believer there is relief in knowing he is in a better place and his suffering is over.

Sorry for your loss Sam. Remember the good times. My Dad was a Medic in WW2. Made a lot of trips to Central Virginia to help him out. Very independent, Made it to 88 and passed in 2011. Miss him terribly.-------------------Ray

Sorry to hear that Sam. You’re right leading up to it is harder than the event itself.
Just went through that with my last Aunt that had no children of her own. Very difficult to watch the decline in faculties. And every visit you ask who’s in the picture on the window sill (she, her brothers and sisters as kids) and start to hear back, I don’t know, some people they say I used to know.
Truly in a better place than trapped in a state of declining confusion. Still very difficult, hang in there.

May he RIP, and peace to you. I pray my mother doesn't suffer from dementia as she gets older. Some minor things are happening, but I pass that off to being 80 in a few months. I hope that's all it is.

My Dad passed about 9 years ago. Although difficult at the time, I knew he was in a better place.
I have been following the difficult time you have experienced with your Dad's decline. He also is in a better place.

My thoughts are with you both Sam. He was a good man and raised a good son. You hung in there with him thru everything...so many don’t. My sincere condolences. RIP Dad.

Dementia got my dad (also a Korean Vet) 5 years ago. Horrible thing to witness. I am sorry for your loss.

Been there my man, Best to you and all involved. t will get better in time as the cliché goes but its true.
