Seems the future might be with CF barrels. Lightness is now a big deal with the military. The only downside is recoil.
From my uniform days, I remember complaints about recoil and the powers at that time listened. Hence, the M16.
Making a rifle lighter than the current M4 can only mean keeping the 5.6x45 as standard cartridge. Anything with greater ME mean more recoil.
