Ivory grips
I have a Colt SAA made in the Colt Custom Shop in 1987 including ivory grips. Can this firearm with the ivory grip be listed and sold on Gun Broker? There are varying answers to this question and it is difficult know the truth.

I doubt it. Here are the rules for transferring ivory.

I I see ivory gripped firearms sell on here -if you look you can see them. Legal? I know I bought one on here and posed no issues. NOT much help I know-

That's the catch all. I see ivory stocks listed for sale. Understand that the "grip" is the part of the pistol to which you attach the stocks.
Bottom line: If it is legal to sell ivory then you can list it for sale on GB. Determining the actual legality is up to you.

I'd be really surprised if Colt was selling genuine ivory grips in 1987.
Many years ago, I recall folks testing grips by removing them from the gun, & touching a hot needle to the back; if the grip material melts, it's synthetic.

The label at the end of the original box does say ivory grips. Also gave it the hot needle and black light tests. Both passed.

Wondered the same thing....I've been seriously considering buying a set listed but now I think it may be best to back up and re-think and research buying Ivory grips.......losing money is a pet peeve of mine.

Well, I lettered a Buntline made in 1984? and it came from the Custom Shop and it stated, Grips, Ivory as it was ordered that way. I could be off a year or two but ivory for sure.

If these grips came from Colt, more than likely they are reconstituted ivory if they where sold in 1987. There are other types of ivory as well other than elephant ivory. There is also ivory from walrus tusks, which I think is still legal to sell across state lines.
