speaking of measuring shotgun chokes

Chokes seem to be a magical art as two guns with the same choke can shoot different patterns using the same load. That being said when measuring a choke two measurements need to be obtained, normal barrel diameter and the choke diameter. The difference of th two is obviously the amount of choke.

This explains it better than I can

    Choke (firearms) - Wikipedia
In firearms, a choke is a tapered constriction of a gun barrel at the muzzle end. Chokes are most commonly seen on shotguns, but are also used on some rifles, pistols, or even airguns.[1] Notably, some .22 LR match rifles have a constricted bore diameter near the muzzle.[citation needed]

To complicate things modern shells with a plastic shot cup perform differently than the old shells without any protection for the shot column as it goes down the barrel. I have seen older guns marked modified throw a full or extra full pattern with modern ammunition. You are right patterning a shotgun is the best way to determine what works regardless of choke markings or measurements. Bob

Bobjudy nailed it. Also to be considered is the alignment of the choke with the bore of the barrel. I've seen a lot of them that were off center. ("choke" is a percentage of restriction. aka, 10%, 5% etc)
