for those who carry pocket knife.......
seems the older I get the more I lay it down and forget where I layed it, I lose em way before I can break them. Well lost my last one this week so went to a website I had bookmarked was buying a small 3, to 3 1/2 inch pocket knife for like $3.50 each. went to the site and price of these cheap chinese folders are now almost $10 apiece! got to searching around and found another site had a small 2 blade 3inch folder for $3.20 each, ordered 8 of them and just got em in the mail today. they will never be the quality of an old timer or shrade, but for the price it was just what I wanted, small, light enough not to weigh pocket down and if you lose one it won't break you up. I know you knife snobs will flame this post but I am not about to pay $20 or better for pocket knife and lose it in a months time, matter of fact I gave the mailman one after he asked what was in the box he handed me...... got 7 to last me the next few years

I've changed to a pocket knife with a clip. I sometimes work around machinery, & am afraid that I (or someone else) will get clothing caught in something. So, I feel more relaxed carrying it in my right front pocket, because I know it will always be right where I need it. I have a couple of "giveaway" knives to choose from

Maybe 15 years ago I was at the SHOT Show where one of the distributors had a special on small folding knives branded as RUKO, at some ridiculously low price- I'm thinking 100 knives for $59 shipped.
I kept these knives in the car and in my motorcycles, and I always had several in my tool box. I handed them out to the mailman and the UPS and FedEx drivers, friends and relatives, guys at the shooting range, you name it.
This is the last one! I still have it for no reason other than it's the last of the line.

Don't insult us Benchmade SNOBS with your Chinese chit.

Well shucks, I carry Spyderco, but I do carry a Benchmade OTF on special occasions.
I absolutely have to put everything back in the same place from day to day or it is left behind on the next outing.
Knock on wood, I have never lost a knife.

Misplaced, maybe, but I’ve never lost one. I sometimes store them in the laundry hamper.

I have a different one for each pair of pants I switch to. Ive lost maybe one or two over the years but always have one in my pocket. Usually its a case or buck. Bucks arent my favorite, they are too hard to sharpen.

Cheap China's have their place, especially if you loose them often. I am finding I have a use for one to two inch blades much more often than larger blades. But I do not do farm work or heavy cutting where a larger blade is required.

...Ive carried the same Benchmade for ten years+...paid a hundred and something back when. Knife handle & blade have held up and blade still sharpens to a razors edge....most of the black is still on the blade along with butterfly logo.
After breaking and loosing cheaper knives, figured if I paid a good bit for one, I wouldn't break or loose it...I was right. Human nature is to take care of something one considers "expensive", I do anyway...😙

I will buy a couple $1 specials when I see them, and keep them as "TSA Knives" that I won't miss if I forget and have one in my pocket at the airport. Or used to, since I haven't been to an airport in over a year. The last ones I saw at Lowe's use a little one-inch replaceable blade just like a larger utility knife. Have never seen those replacement blades, but haven't really looked, either. I think most of the el cheapo knives I see were probably made in Wherethehellistan from bombed-out Russian truck bumpers.

Cheap or expensive, I lose them all just as quickly.

Clip them onto your truck keys. <--magic

I too tend to lose them . That said I have been lucky buying them at yard sales over the years . At present I have about 50 “ name brand” ( case , Schrade, buck, etc ) that I paid $2to $4 a piece for . If I loose one I just grab another one . Also keep some of the el- cheapo's in my tool box and tackle box .not out anything if they rust up

I have recently rediscovered the small 3 blade Buck folding pocket knives. I love them.

A story.
Some time ago, (us old guys can say that) that all-American knife company that we all love (Buck) discovered they could have their knives made in China for pennies on the dollar.
They could then slightly reduce the price over what the "mercan-made" knives were selling for (consumers would love that, they thought) and with the new lower cost of manufacturing, company profits sky rocketed. Since the Chinee were making the knives with equal, if not better quality, (remember this point) Buck Knives Company felt it was a win-win situation for everyone.
Nope!
Americans demanded American-made knives!
So now, Buck knives are now being made back here in the good ole USA! Yeehaw! But, but, do you wonder what the Chinee are doing with their tooling and materials? I'll tell you what they are doing - THEY ARE MAKING KNIVES! (I was yelling where you see all-caps.)
Buck co. is not happy about it. Collectors are not happy about it. Buck owners are not happy about it.
As knife consumers we must now be very careful to avoid "knock-offs". Most have almost identical markings but there are differences. Most knock-offs have inferior cases, boxes, and paperwork, and generally, a much lower price. Some unscrupulous sellers are passing them off as genuine Bucks at near full cost!
I have purchased and used a number of the Buck knock-offs and for the price I have been pleased. I threw one out (in a gutpile), not a big deal. I used one to trim roofing material at my cabin. (My buddy nearly had a heart attack when he saw that knife).
The Chinee must be sorting-out their knife-making business because their knives are now being sold under other company names. The one I am most familiar with is Elk Ridge.
This one (Elk Ridge ER-A009) is very similar to my faithful Buck 110 except this one has a pocket clip, spring-assist open, pearl-look handles, star screws and 3CR13 stainless steel. 4.75 inch blade.
The price over the last year has climbed to whopping $11.63! I stocked up.
Sorry, Buck Co. but you did it to yourself. My loyalty lies with me and mine.

I generally carry a Case knife. I have only lost a couple of knives and those were a long time ago. I decided my pocket knife was in one of two places, either in my hand being used or in my pocket, haven't lost one since.

I was selling knives when the Chinese Bucks came out. The ones we sold weren't the familiar models like the 110 but there was an assortment of a dozen or so different Chinese models. Most of the time they just sat on the shelf because customers would see the made in China label and buy a Buck made in America instead. They might buy other things made in China but not a Buck knife made there. I seem to recall Benchmade and Spyderco had lines of China made models too. In my store those sold better than the Chinese Bucks. Buck was a longtime American company and at seems my customers wanted it to stay that way. Wish they would think about other products that same way. Bob

I refuse to go through life cutting myself with a cheap knife.

I have lost one knife so far i my life it was a buck 110 I left laying on a ditch embankment while help renovating the dayton airport back about 40 years ago
I had to buy a replacement and still have it and about 1/2 dozen case pocket knifes .
the dirt cheep china knifes back when the well know auction site was taking off I bought several boxes of the different size ones maybe a hundred total I think about fifty cents average from the smallest to the sheath knifes . I gave away knifes to a lot of family and friends that year , I even found about a dozen at least of them a month ago I had tucked away and forgot about I gave to my sons to pass out to there buddies
Spider I have always liked your kay-bar since the first time I seen you post it . I seem to remember you were / are a dealer for them ?

I haven't carried a knife in my pocket for decades. On the farm and every day use I carry a folding utility knife that has a lifetime warranty(not for loss) from Menards ($3-5) and a mid-grade multi-tool. During hunting season I often carry a KaBar folder on my belt but otherwise no knife.
For going to town and work dress, I carry clipped in my front jeans pocket a Schrade assisted opener that is just right for my needs and a multi-tool.
There are lots of cheap but serviceable knives on the market. At the "2019 Black Friday" sale in Menards they had 3 packs of Camillus folders priced @ $9.95 so I bought 3 packs. Darned good knives for $3.50(after tax) each.

I cannot go anywhere or survive without a GOOD sharp knife. Dull knives are dangerous.
Always carried a good knife even in grade school and I'm still a country boy.
It is a sad thing that I do not fit into society today as a American if I carry a knife.
I have a 3 blade pocket knife that was given to me and the knife is 59 years old. I carried it for 30 years. Blades still useable. I could send it to the maker, they are still in business and have the blades replaced no charge, but then it would not be the same knife. I have a habit of feeling for my knife quite often, if it's missing I then know where it was last used, but very rarely ever walk off or get far from my knife.
I can give a knife to my son and 2 weeks later he would not know where it went.
If he carries a pocket knife to the woods it won't last 2 weeks. He is a good guy, some people just lose things. I tell him he would lose his AxS if it were not glued to him.

my dad gave me my first pocket knife I was about 8 yrs old or so
I carried it every where . in high school I bought a stiletto knife from a add in a out door magazine out of NY it had a 6" blade and folding guard . about 10.00 it was impressive to look at and flip open between classes or when the teachers were paying attention it got passed around the class rooms many times but was all show chrome and black scales it would not cut hot butter then in about 11 grade I bought my first buck 110 I carried it every day to school and at my work place ( local grocery store ) its the one I lost on the construction site about 8 years later . but back then a lot of fellows even a few girls carried pocket knifes when I was in school as i bet a lot of you did sure were different times
I even took a m1 carbine in one day with the teachers permission as a sales demonstration item it was a DECA class when I was a senior . even thought it was to stay in the class room of course a couple of other kids took it out in the hall way waving it around, I remember all the kids walking in the hall laughing or coming over to see it ... no one called the police no one called the principle think about that
OMG I think of what would happen today they would stop by my house shoot my dog then come on the school and possibly shoot me for having it

Tractor supply is a pretty good source for reasonable knives.

Not cheap, not expensive. FREE!
Mark might remember but I was at SHOT Show when another gunsmith found me to say that the lady at the Recknagel booth was giving away nice airweight pocket knives. I rearranged my route to work my way over to the Recknagel booth to see what was going on.
She was tall, maybe 5'8", slim with dark hair, German and very good looking. I chatted with her, then dug out my Recknagel order (yes I had one) and my FFL. We did the paperwork and she smiled as she handed me this nice lightweight pocket knife.
Even better was the fact that we had dinner together that night. She said she loved Mexican but wanted to get off the strip for a change of pace. Long to short, we had a terrific evening, I was a true blue gentleman.
I have carried this knife every day for the last 20+ years without fail except for the times I fly when it stays at home.
Best.
