Correct. GBHQ implemented the change about a week ago. Whether or not is becomes permanent is up to HQ.

Seems like it might be kinda tough for those on the outside who may be thinkin' of joinin' to see what a fun lovin' groovy bunch we are if they have to sign in. I spent about a year reading posts before finally joining.

It might slow down "they who won't be named" from trolling the site.

That's true, but we usually do a pretty good job of weeding them out if they do infiltrate. Heck sometimes they're even mildly amusing!

I guess that just elevates our status in the world's eyes. It feels good to be special sometimes.

Starting to act like that facebook thing people don't want anything to do with. Sign in or you can't read the posts. Makes sense to join if one wishes to post - Not so much elsewise.
Hi Mike,
Welcome to the Gunbroker Forums.
Please take the time to read the Posting Guidelines before you criticize either the forums or Auctions.
@...: https://forums.gunbroker.com/discussion/1881593/posting-guidelines
GunBroker.com provides this forum to allow users to engage in open discussion regarding topics of interest to our community.
In general we expect everyone to act like adults and to show respect for each other, just as you would if the other parties were guests in your home. If you are looking for an unmoderated free-for-all you will not be at home here.
We do not allow the posting of 'For Sale' or 'For Trade' listings anywhere on these message forums. If you have something to sell, please post it on our auction site at http://www.gunbroker.com We do not allow ?For Trade? listings anywhere on our auction site or message forums.
Other stuff we automatically delete:-
Auction support, technical support, or billing questions are not allowed in the forums. If you have a support or billing question click Help Center from the top of any auction site page.
-
Complaints or criticism about GunBroker.com, its staff, its policies, or any buyer or seller on that site. If you have a problem with an auction transaction use the auction feedback system and/or contact tech support.
-
Complaints or criticism about these message forums or their moderators.
-
Complaints about businesses, persons, or transactions unrelated to this site (in general all complaints will be deleted).
-
Questions about why a post was deleted, locked, edited, or moved. This page explains why.
-
Commercial advertisements for any product, service, or web site.
-
Posts containing links or references to any competing site.
-
Posts containing links or references to any web site critical of this site.
-
Posts containing links or references to any web site we do not like.
-
Profanity, nudity, vulgarity, racism, etc.
-
Posts that violate any federal, state, or local law, or that infringe on another party's intellectual property (copyright, trademark, etc.) are prohibited.
If we delete or close your post it means that we did not want it here. If we deleted or closed a post and you re-post it, your forum access privileges will be suspended. For a new member to draw parallels to the infamous Facebook because of logging in is not very bright. Hundreds if not thousands of blogs and forums require a login of members before they can read or even view pictures so it's not unusual. It is the content which separates us from those of the crowd which subscribe to the socialist tomes of Facebook. We here at the Gunbroker Forums take great umbrage to your comparison so please cease and desist any such comparisons.
Best.

This ain't gonna end well...

I'm not positive, but I think the move also prevents data spiders from Google, Yahoo, etc. from crawling the site and indexing the content. It does insulate conversations here a little from prying eyes.

It didn't. Gun Broker policy is not open to debate, at least not in Gun Broker's house. Further more, criticizing a moderator for defending GB policy, which is one of the moderators many obligations, is out of bounds. Worse yet is critiquing moderator performance. That's my job 😎
As I had previously stated, there has been no word from GBHQ as to whether this change will be made permanent.
