Did I screw up on a sale I made (Tax)
Hey guys, I put some ammo up and sold it to multiple locations (Texas, Oregon, Kentucky) The question I have is I selected "Seller does not collect taxes/fees" under Applicable Taxes and Fees: My understanding was that I didn't need to charge that because I'm just a private sale. The invoice for Texas and Oregon was the total sale and shipping that's it no taxes. The one for Kentucky added 6% to the sale and I let the guy know that Gunbroker is now charging taxes for Kentucky. He then paid me the $23 buck for his order but wasn't happy about it because he didn't know (I totally get it). My question is, did I mess up or what? Is the gunbroker option not correct now. If I select "Seller must collect taxes/fee" it gives me options for all states (Mine would be Idaho). If I have to pay taxes to sell and fees then I'm making less than gunbroker at the end.
This is what some info I found says. Should I have put this in my description? Who eats this fee, me or the buyer? I'm confused here.
Starting on January 1, 2021, GunBroker.com will collect and remit sales tax on behalf of all sellers for sales in which the item is sold into the following states:
- Georgia – GA
- Iowa – IA
- Indiana – IN
- Kentucky – KY
- Maine – ME
- Nebraska – NE
- New Jersey – NJ
- Nevada – NV
As GunBroker.com works to implement tax collection and remittance for all relevant states, the list of states for which we carry out the process described below will increase and/or change. We will strive to notify sellers of the changes being made to the list of states above as they occur. As used in this document, the term “GunBroker.com MPF States” means all the states listed above, as updated on this webpage from time to time
Thanks

The entire tax collection system is complex, confusing and convoluted. Nevertheless, if applicable sales taxes were not collected from the buyer, you are on the hook because the seller-you, will be assessed the sales taxes along with your GB auction fees.

"The entire tax collection system is complex, confusing and convoluted. Nevertheless,".................VERY TRUE, however the buyer is supposed to pay the sales tax. If the seller has no business in the buyers state, the buyer is 'supposed' ( ;-) ) to send in the sales tax to his/her state themselves, G.B. has elected to collect the sales tax and send it to the states mentioned. this is added to the invoice sent to the buyer. you should mention this in any future sales.

I have over 800 listings (auctions) presently on Gunbroker. Is there a way I can add a tax statement to all my auctions at once?

Do what I do, or used to do when my husband and I owned a shop.. mark the item down by 10% if you aren't sure then sell for the original price and claim you claimed taxes... then pay taxes in your own state. Here in Texas that is 8.7%. Therefore you cover most state taxes.
Aka: charge the same price you would have charged anyway, but if asked claim you charged whatever that is minus the state sales tax for the state in question. Some states don't even have sales Tax, like Oregon, and in Texas there is no sales Tax on Ammo - only on firearms. So it seems the Gunbroker site did taxes just fine. The two states it didnt hold taxes for dont HAVE taxes for ammo, or sales in general in the case of Oregon. It's impossible to keep up with state taxes, and the 10% "on sale" route covers all but I think 2 states... but those 2 states have mass restrictions on ownership, sooo... we used to have roughly 15,000 sales around the country every year and we were never once audited in 15 years of store ownership

Good Morning,
I know this is a contentious topic these days especially since it's new and very complex. But remember...
The forums are not the explanatory arm of the Auction side. We are separate with no tie ins whatsoever. The questions which involve any of the workings of the Auction side must go through that system by opening a Support Issue. Yes, they are backlogged, yes it will take some time to get an answer, nothing will be immediate because of the number of requests regarding these issues.
Here is the link to the Posting Guidelines for your reading pleasure:
